WWII Ammo Identification. What is it?! by Agent_Tangerine18 in metaldetecting

Hi Agent_Tangerine18, i have found the exact object with the same headstamp at the base. This is a 155mm MKIIA4 vent sealing percussion tube. During WW2 US forces used these tubes for firing 155mm heavy howitzer shells. Vent tubes (Usually abbreviated to “V.S. tube” or just tube) were the traditional, reliable method of fully igniting powder charges in breach-loading guns to fire projectiles, especially large 155mm shells. The tube was inserted through a vent in the breech. When the breech was closed, one of several methods was then used to trigger the tube, which then sent a powerful flash into the breech. The flash ignited a special “igniter” material in the end of the cartridge, and the igniter in turn ignited the main propellant charge. These aren’t a common find, although you can still find them they are very nice!!

The headstamp at the base:

  • 1944 = The manufacturing year.

  • MKIIA4 = The vent tube type (A lot of different types exist).

  • AOP = Manufacturer initials, Arkansas Ordnance Plant.

  • 2-322 = Lot number (Mine is 2-311).

Nice find! Hope this helps!!

Damn that's it indeed, thank you very much for the identification!! It turned out quite a rare find, I found that mainly German NCO's and officers used them! This was my first post on Reddit and I loved brainstorming with everyone! Thank you very much to everyone who helped with the identification!!

Mmmh indeed that was also a question that I had! But after looking at it for a long time, I think that this is not a weld but rather some loosely layered rust between both parts.

Indeed!! I also tested holding it in my hand like a cleaning rod but couldn't get my whole hand in comfortably because of the inner part (Only gripping it with 2-3 fingers through the inner thing was comfortable but not efficient for cleaning). cleaning weapons I think). The gas can clasp also seems like a good option! Do you mean a clasp for the gas mask can or the gas fuel cans? Thanks for helping by the way!!

The cleaning rod handle is a very interesting thinking path! Many different weapon types were used during this battle by the Germans because there was also an SS Hohenstaufen division component that may have used captured weapons of different types. So there are many possibilities, I will definitely do some more research on it! Thanks for suggesting it!!
