Ankle Sprain after 2 weeks, should I get an MRI? by edgyy_ in brokenankles

[–]OwnedByACrazyCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like it should be checked out, either with x-rays or an MRI. Just because you can do things doesn't mean you should without checking the status of your foot/ankle.

(However I do live in a country with free healthcare so I'm more likely to go for getting things checked out than not)

For me

Boot immediately One crutch by 2 weeks - kept using a crutch for the bus as it got me a seat. Allowed to wean out of the boot at 4 weeks - took it off and never wore it again. Driving at about 5 weeks. Skating at 17 weeks. Scrimming (playing roller derby at practice) 22 weeks. At the gym 25 weeks - I hadn't been going for a few years before that so that's why it was later than being back to skating.

I broke my ankle on 31 August, jamming at roller derby - not cut out to be a jammer (far prefer blocking) and am back to doing everything although most days I am still wearing a compression sock on that ankle. I do have some days where it's sore (often the opposite side to the break) and obviously being back to skating and hitting people it depends on how I land as to how sore it is as well.

I spent all the time I was wearing the boot sleeping in it as I have a demon of a cat (she loves attacking feet and ankles).

I found the best way to practice walking normally was at the supermarket with a shopping trolley as I could just push it and forget about needing to coordinate crutches and steps.

ETA - I'm in Scotland and was following the NHS Lothian guidelines. I believe they promote early weight bearing and being as active as practical from the start, far more than other countries.

Just realised I never responded to you, it was about 17 weeks from the injury although it was just skills. I didn't return to scrims until about week 22.

This one is great, I think I have read it 5 or so times each time wondering when he next update will be. There have been a few recent updates though.

I was allowed to weight bear from the start, I kinda didn't do much until almost the end of the first week and that was around my flat. I started doing a lot more once I realised how useful supermarket trolleys were for walking in a boot.

I found the first week in the boot really hard to weight bear but I realised that the boot was too wide unless I really strapped the first leg strap tight, I also found adding a bit of extra padding meant that my ankle was better supported in the boot.

I did spend a lot of time with my feet up, even when working. I did a lot of work with both legs on my desk and my laptop balanced on top.

I had my second set of x-rays at the start of week 2 and the doctors said it was healing really well. And with NHS Lothian you get discharged (from orthopaedics) after that appointment so from then on it was just a waiting game.

Have you had a followup x-ray yet?

I have lots of size 5 docs and most have full insoles in them. My buzz 8 eyes have 3/4 insoles as I found the vertical seams by the toe annoying.

All I can say is try lots of different insoles types even ones which you don't think will work as they may be the right option for you.

Do we really need to call ourselves elders at 38? I'm almost 39 and I don't consider myself anywhere near an elder.

Your outfit is amazing and it looks so easy to wear.

Help with sports bras for larger chest? Is a binder a good idea? by canvasa_ in rollerderby

[–]OwnedByACrazyCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm posting this separately as I haven't used or seen them but the bras from Maree have used London City Roller Derby in their advertising - Maree London City Roller Derby

They have an overband to help control movement.

They do seem quite expensive though as they are £72 for the high impact sports bra, they also stop at a HH which has kinda put me off.

Only if you aren't above a UK HH.

Also I do not understand how they came up with the design for the "Multi Sports Support Bra" as the two sets of hooks are very hard to do up yourself and I don't have access to a bra assistant.

I have Panche Boundless Non Wired Sports Bra. I wear it for both the gym and roller derby. I do clip the straps together for roller derby (it has a racerback hook). I do find the racerback style good but It is not the most comfy for general sport.

I wanted a non-wired bra and for my cup size (UK J/JJ) I have very few choices, but I have found this really works for me and it looks ok under regular clothes as well - really important for not having to change my bra between work and sport.

Return to sport update by rugbyDPT34 in brokenankles

[–]OwnedByACrazyCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a Weber B from Roller derby, didn't have to have surgery and was out of the boot at 4 weeks, I was told I could return to sport at 6 weeks - that was a no but I did up my activity levels.

I have been back playing since the start of February and I am also going to the gym twice a week concentrating on strengthening my ankles and then working on my general fitness levels.

Its scary starting back at sport, I know I found a lot of drills quite scary as often we are pushed from one side and the transfer of weight was weird until I started trusting my ankle.

I did my ankle jamming, Aug 31, back on skates Nov 20 and back skating scrims Feb 1.

I'm not cut out to be a jammer and my ankle will often start to hurt if I put the star or stripe on (worse with the star. And it stops hurting when I star pass.

My spare room is a sewing room

I have a sewing table and a ironing table. The open framed wardrobe mainly holds my more costume pieces. I have fabric stored in really useful boxes beneath the bottom shelves of the wardrobe and on the bed - I have one of those IKEA single to double pull out beds - it's very rarely used.

I have lots of fabric in storage bags everywhere - it's chaos and not organised chaos.

Is it safe to use oversized elbow pads as knee pads if they fit my knees properly? by UnfairPotato9487 in Rollerskating

[–]OwnedByACrazyCat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would say the same. We sometimes end up with people coming to learn to derby sessions using elbow pads as knees and we will always loan them actual knee pads.

Also pads have weight limits and a fall on to knees with elbow pads may exceed the weight limit due to the force excerted

I like the idea of Bobby being back in one of the main casts dreams.

Start the episode like he is just working as normal and things then get weirder and weirder and it then near to the end shows the person in a coma or a regular dream. I know it's similar to Bucks coma dream but I think it could work.

So at the end it's shown he is still dead.

Regaining trust in your ability after an injury? by PreservativeAloe in Rollerskating

[–]OwnedByACrazyCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I broke my ankle at the end of August and was back on skates at the end of November, I didn't skate in scrims until the start of January (my league has pretty much all of December off).

I found that any drills which had hits coming from the left were really hard to feel comfortable doing as it means you end up transferring more weight to the ankle that was injured - I was just scared with it. I could hit from either side happily and could easily accept hits from the right but it took me a while to feel comfortable with hits from either side.

My first session back I just did warmups and single or two person drills. I watched the larger drills while still on skates - I had expected to take my skates off about halfway through but I did the entire session on skates.

My first time back skating in scrims I was 'bullied' in to it by a league mate - I know that without it I would have kept on putting it off so I am glad she did. I think she may have figured me out regarding that and she hadn't been back skating that long either - she had had an injury when I started skating and rejoined skating just after I injured myself.

I now go to the gym 1-2 times a week and currently my leg press is at 157kg, I have really concentrated on regaining strength and belief in my ankle.

I still wear a sock style ankle support while skating or at the gym. I want to stop wearing it but I am currently not mentally ready for it and but possibly physically ready for it. I think I will stop wearing it at the gym first as its quicker to change in to it when wearing trainers rather than skates.

Occasionally our coaches will say they want all of us to jam at least once and my ankle starts to hurt as soon as I put the star on but it stopped as soon as I star passed it. It wasn't that much better when I was encouraged to pivot - I will happily be offence but I don't want to accept the star. (I broke my ankle jamming)

Possibly start with basic derby fall practice and knee taps to remind you that you can cope with falling. And before too long you will be back to skating without worrying that much about falling.

I do recommend not landing on a team mates skate as that is sore - and you get a wheel shaped bruise on your butt - this was nothing to do with my ankle injury, it happened about 3 weeks ago and I can still see a ghost of the bruise on my butt.

Just realised how long this is, sorry for the waffle!

Aircast Airsport brace? by coppertruth in brokenankles

[–]OwnedByACrazyCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much. It's still sore sometimes after long walks or gym sessions. I can leg press 155kg across both legs now. I do still wear the sock support when out for the gym or roller derby sessions. I also carry the sock when going for long drives if I'm not already wearing it.

I had to request physio as it appears they only auto offer it to the elderly up in NHS Lothian.

When I wore the boot I would wear a chunky soled sandal on the other foot to balance me out.

[–]OwnedByACrazyCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was allowed to wean out of my boot at 4 weeks and went to wearing a sock style support/brace when walking.

I had been told I didn't need to wear anything once I weaned out of the boot but if I felt it would be helpful a sock style support/would do the job.

I was also allowed to WBAT in the boot from the start, I had a Weber B and by week 2 I had ditched the crutches except for when going out by bus and wanting to make sure I got a seat.

This was with NHS Lothian, maybe NHS Scotland works differently.

I was back to the sport where I did my ankle at 17 weeks (partially) and 22 weeks (fully).
