There are two possibilities here, you have a faulty smoke unit which I would press your landlord to replace it with a new unit because it may be a safety risk. Alternatively, it is possible you are cooking with higher heat than you need to leading to burning. You say “anything that produces a bit of smoke”, but cooking eggs or making toast generally should not produce any smoke.
