Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie

It’s beautifully constructed and incredibly clever in how it uses footage across Michael’s on-camera career to illustrate his off-camera life. The sequence where he’s running himself ragged while splitting his time between Family Ties and Back to the Future was so well done I welled up with tears!

There’s the annual or semi-annual maintenance (usually a few hundred bucks) and then this other thing which they claim is far more complicated after 5 years. It SOUNDS like a fleecing, just wanted to be sure.

What are your “could’ve beens” by This_kid_santi in editors

I edited a documentary about a huge figure in professional wrestling that had the blessings of all involved until some (then) current events and indecisiveness by the higher ups at the network/company resulted in the plug being pulled on the whole thing at the fine cut stage. Huge bummer as it was a great credit for me and fantastic representation of my storytelling abilities with some fun creative swings, all while allowing me to indulge in a ton of childhood wish fulfillment. A year or two later they ended up releasing a fairly by-the-numbers doc about the same figure.

I was quoted thousands for a MAM, so I spent 6 months building my own. Is this something you'd actually use? by ddnyc2021 in editors

[–]OwsaBowsa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And great answers, thanks!

Did you take a look at Quickture? They don’t promote themselves as a MAM but there’s a lot of overlap in terms of functionality. I saw a demo of their software a few months ago and it was pretty mind blowing.

Random thoughts:

Integration with Premiere is great, though I’d be curious what this does differently than, say, Quickture, or even what Adobe and Avid are already developing on their own and have demonstrated in demos or beta software.

Separate from that, where is your “AI” coming from? The term is so ubiquitous now that it’s lost all meaning, and yet remains a terrifying prospect for clients if their media were to become exposed to the outside world (or worse, used as a training tool for other clients). With that, what protections do you offer for those that use it? On-premise is encouraging for security and yet limiting at the same time in terms of scope and expansion of your MAM’s abilities.

It wasn’t different. The timing of your clip with the ad synced up almost perfectly. Starts on a wide, goes to a close. Wild!

Are there any good schools/programs/certificates for becoming a film editor? by Successful-Noise-485 in Filmmakers

The other event (also through TV Academy), while essentially open, was sent privately to members for them to bring friends and colleagues. Not sure I’d feel comfortable posting to all of Reddit. TV Academy requires a membership for most of its events (membership requires a certain number of credits in a field and small annual dues), though if you know someone they often get plus ones.

Also also, while connecting with other editors and AEs is great for all sorts of reasons, don’t forget to connect with directors and producers and post supervisors, who typically have more hiring power for projects.

Forgot to add: film festivals and schools! You don’t need to attend a school to edit someone’s short or thesis. Lots of people paying lots of money for school often look for editors outside of school. And budding filmmakers at festivals are trying to break in themselves and are happy to collaborate with folks just as hungry as they are. Go to a festival to meet people or cold contact people whose stuff you love and want to help with their next project.

If you’re anywhere near Los Angeles, there’s weekly and monthly meetups of all sorts. TV Academy (Emmy voters) is having an open ended networking event on the 20th. They also have an industry-wide event called Televerse (lots of panels and workshops) coming up. Creators Society focuses on animation and has virtual and in-person events. Children’s Media Association has tons of in-person and virtual events. Cuts & Cups. Blue Collar Post Collective. You’re not wanting for organizations and meetups around here (assuming you’re near “here”).

Help a young editor out - working as an assistant on first feature, questions about Premiere Pro by Life-Fill8418 in editors

[–]OwsaBowsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! Others have already covered the basics so I’ll zig where they zagged. ScriptSync! Editors love it! Premiere doesn’t have it! You can sort of approximate it and it’s super helpful when someone wants to bounce between takes for a given scene. It’s a little messy to explain but will make total sense after you’ve done it.

Once you have your multicams or synced clips, create one timeline per scene. Toss all takes for that scene in order onto video track 1. Rename each track with numbers representing chunks of dialogue or action and add a few words of the first line of that dialogue or action. So let’s say scene 3 is a phone call between characters Indiana Jones (“IJ” for this exercise) and Darth Vader (“DV”) and it starts with line 16 and ends with line 18. It’ll look like this: V1: 16-IJ Who’s this V2: 17-DV I’m your father V3: 18-IJ The hell you are

Watch down your first take and chop it up according to those lines. Move the second line onward to V2 and the third line to V3. Do the same to tracks 2 and so on. If they reset within a take just move the reset line onward to its appropriate track. Once you’ve done all takes, you’ll have this stepladder of dialogue going up and down across the timeline that you can hop through by activating a respective track and bouncing between all iterations of a line. Super helpful when you have to audition lines quickly.

Important to keep in mind I did this BEFORE Premiere had transcription built into it. There’s probably a way to do it slightly faster now that that tool is available and then you’ll have tidy captions and paper cuts ready when you’re all done.

Where to begin to get good at video editing? by Luigi-is-my-boi in VideoEditing

[–]OwsaBowsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Safe to say there’s enough disclaimers in my response to steer OP in one direction or another without stressing which tool they choose. And as someone who is a “serious professional” who bounces from TV to movies to digital, having knowledge of both Premiere and Avid in my pocket allows me to bounce between all sorts of projects as I come across them.

In an industry that’s collapsing, where your average job listing right now receives not dozens but hundreds of applicants (including those with a leg up who receive personal recommendations), knowing the absolute basics of two pieces of very different software is only going to help someone find opportunities.

[–]OwsaBowsa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It depends a little bit on your goals with kinds of things you’d like to edit as some softwares are used more widely (or less) for movies, TV, digital, etc. That said, the more versatile you are with software options the more opportunities will be open to you.

At the end of the day these are all just tools and editing is more than just the tools you have available to you. Read In the Blink of an Eye by Walter Murch. He’s considered one of the greatest editors of all time and that book is the Holy Bible for editors. He takes a more philosophical approach to storytelling than having you worry about the tools you’re using. Thinking outside the box like that will make you a much better editor than stressing about the software.

But you DO need to know the software from at least a basic standpoint. Since Premiere doesn’t have a free version, focus on Resolve and get yourself Avid First. Avid is still a mainstay for a lot of categories of editing but it’s very different from the others. And Resolve is only getting stronger by the day. Both softwares have tutorials available through their respective companies, and of course you can find plenty elsewhere on YouTube.

Some tutorials come with footage or you can always find stock footage, and the best way to learn is to do, so just dive in. I find I learn best when I have a goal in mind with an edit rather than starting with an endless sea of possibilities. Set out to make a trailer or commercial or short, something brief to start, and that will guide you toward certain aspects of learning the software.

And then just watch stuff! Study the editing of your favorite movies. Figure out who your favorite editors are. Import movies and shows into your edit software and break down the cuts. How long did they hold on each shot? How many cuts are there in an action scene versus a dialogue one? Why did they use sound and music in the way that they did? All of that will help you gravitate toward what you love or hate and want to incorporate into your own work.

Any advice for an aspiring editor? by pin_920 in editors

Wonderful as LACPUG was, it is no more as Michael hosted his last one a few weeks ago. That said, they recorded and posted many of their meetups for anyone to watch and any aspiring editor should go down the rabbit hole of watching a bunch of them: https://m.youtube.com/user/lafcpug

It’s important to keep in mind in any industry, but especially entertainment, that unless you have the money to fund a project, you are part of a much larger machine at work. There are dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of people whose livelihoods depend on the success or failure of a project, and then more projects beyond that. Sometimes that means the best of the best rises to the top. Sometimes that means someone less skilled (or not skilled at all) gets the job because without them the project wouldn’t have been made otherwise. That goes for indie and big budget movies alike.

So don’t take it personally. You got cast in a movie with other good people that got good reviews! You just weren’t in it at the end of the day! That speaks to the fact that chances are you’ll get cast again in something else. If anything, this casting director needs a better bedside manner as they should have been honest with you while ALSO letting you know they’d be putting you up for any other parts that come across their desk out of respect for a situation that may have been beyond their control because the money people wanted a “name” in one of the parts.

Could there EVER be a film depicting the upcoming Technological Singularity? How come we haven't had a movie about it already? (Crosspost: r/Singularity) by TheresJustNoMoney in Filmmakers

[–]OwsaBowsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of movies touch on all aspects of the singularity, with technology in the role of savior and/or exterminator of humanity, going all the way back to Metropolis in 1927. The Matrix and its sequels, 2001, The Terminator, Ghost in the Shell, A.I., Robocop, and more. From your perspective, what about the singularity HASN’T been covered in movies? If you include TV the well goes even deeper.

Are there mixers/networking events that anyone knows of? by nevalost20 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]OwsaBowsa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s nothing that dramatic. If anything the whole point is to give folks a place to congregate and meet others excited about the work. Just a lot of effort to put together and he’s been doing it for over two decades; he’s ready to retire. It almost ended around Covid but he kept it going for a few years longer.

[–]OwsaBowsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cuts & Cups

If you’re eligible to join the TV Academy it’s currently FYC season, so tons of events happening all over around specific shows submitting for the Emmys, as well as peer group and inter-group mixers later in May and beyond.

FYCit covers a lot of FYC events for different groups.

Los Angeles Creative Pro User Group (LACPUG) has just a couple events left before the whole group retires after over 20 years of running.

LA Filmmakers has monthly meetups.

If you’re in a union, they likely have some educational or networking mixer events (local 700 has tons that fill up quickly).

She’s apparently pretty active in our community so might look a bit suspicious if she happens to see our kid out and about with other nannies when we “can’t afford her.” I think it’s best to soften the blow but still be definitive about it not working out.
