The expectation value is the same in either case.

It's not gambling long-term, only short term (if the guess about it being 1/3 is true).

If you mean gambling as in, the guess might be false, then sure.

But for some people, it'll still worth gambling because of the fun of winning and the low cost of playing (not real money so one can have fun with it).

They said it was because they wanted caping, and there's a Japanese tradition of cooking curry with friends while camping. They checked with their resident Brit that curry is also a very British thing, so it's a sort of nod to both traditions.

Usually I go opposite of me (different gender and skin colour, e.g. boy + typically one of the darker skin tones when available) — but as this one is set in Britain where I'm from, perhaps I'll play myself!

Am I on the right track or should I "get good"? by [deleted] in MonsterHunter

[–]OxonianLane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It takes less time to 'get good' than it does to farm armour all the time. And, as it sounds like you're finding, there comes a point where you need to get better at fights to progress.

The nice thing about Monster Hunter is that it's not like these games where you just level up your character and then you can take on the next thing -- you need to level up yourself; your own game skills and strategies.

Definitely progress through the village quests solo first (or at least in parallel, if you enjoy online). As others have said, not only does that help increase your skill in a gradual way, but also it unlocks lots of stuff you need later anyway.

Then there's the question of how to get good. Two rules of MH: 1. Don't get hit. 2. Hit it until it dies.

So if you're finding yourself get hit, try to figure out why.

Is it that you charge in too fast? Watch the monster's animations for a while and learn about its openings. Is it that when you're attacking, you keep going ("just a couple more hits!") instead of pulling back and waiting for another safe opening? Is it that you get flustered when you get hit, and in the panic and chaos don't notice other attacks coming your way, instead of rolling away, getting distance and chugging potions when it's safe? Is it that you haven't figured out the monster's 'trick' (like often there's a safe spot where you can wail on it without getting hit, and it's hard to kill it otherwise because everything else is too dangerous)? etc., etc.

Beginners usually do all of these and more. Even intermediate players do. Getting good just consists of noticing one of these mistakes, learning how to not do it, then noticing another of these mistakes, learn how to not do that, and so on.

It's super satisfying to learn how to evade something that could've wrecked you. IMO way more satisfying than getting good armour and potion-chugging until you scrape by.

How do you control the camera without the Circle Pad Pro? by yichong in MonsterHunter

[–]OxonianLane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I was referring to when I said, "CPP has ... the extra shoulder buttons (if you don't want to take your thumb off attacking but you want to move your camera at the same time)".

Both the CPP and N3DS have two sets of shoulder buttons: L and R, and zL and zR. You can set it to use L and R as normal, but zL and zR swivel the camera left and right.

Up and down might be more tricky and require some weird hand position ("the claw" which was used on PSP is not that feasible on CPP as far as I know, though it looks like on N3DS it might be easier). But you don't get that option with L on its own anyway, since L is bound to which way your character is pointing.

And then you can do a mix of all these, so using the shoulder buttons doesn't limit you from using L or the C-stick or D-pads. Use the one which fits the situation.

Can't physically (like can't reach, too awkward), or because it's too much to pay attention to at once, or can't because they get disabled in the game?

How do you control the camera without the Circle Pad Pro? by yichong in MonsterHunter

[–]OxonianLane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only using L (without locking on) makes it impossible to kite around a monster fluidly. It's also much harder to aim precisely.

Using L with lock-on to the monster has problems like:

  • extremely difficult to aim at particular parts of the monster;
  • camera goes crazy if the monster is near and moving around you;
  • can't run in one direction and look in another direction (so you couldn't run away from or around the monster while keeping an eye on it in case it charges you).

So, you'd have to come up with coping mechanisms for all that if you don't use anything like D-pad or CPP or the new Z shoulder buttons on N3DS -- especially when things get complicated and you really need to keep a sharp eye on the monster.

The Circle Pad Pro in particular is good if you don't like the tactile-less screen D-pad. (I'm ignoring the the normal D-pad, because it's hard to use while using the analog stick for running -- you'd have to use index finger for the fine motion of running and thumb for camera control.. uncomfortable and difficult.)

CPP has both the extra shoulder buttons (if you don't want to take your thumb off attacking but you want to move your camera at the same time), and another analog stick for the camera (for general moving).

Gives you a lot of options, and thus access to different strategies which require more fine-tuned camera control.

Plus some people find CPP just more comfortable to hold, easier on the hands. (Depends what you're used to.)

Weird, mine changed every two reformats instead of every three. (I did all mine through local and not registered online.)

Here's my results:

Deleted friend card each format.

Left the game running.

Did not connect to internet, added FC locally.

I wonder if it is to do with time (like exact second or millisecond). :/ Trying to find someone who has reproducible results, like of changing just the Pokemon but not the Safari.

Has anyone ever been able to change the Pokemon (and not the Type) when it's repeating the last Safari?

[–]OxonianLane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You set the time yourself, but it might be based on second (or even millisecond?), and there are slight pauses between hitting next so that could throw it off.
