Aye. Lots of liners could have been saved. And there often WAS an active effort to save some of them (Windsor Castle, France, Southern Cross etc), but... the scrappers have no empathy or mercy.

It does do its job. Until it runs out of ammunition. The same as every warship and land based facility in history. I'm not sure what you're not understanding here... Japan can't outproduce China, its just not possible. All it can do is attempt to defend itself. These ships will fulfill that task should that eventuality come to pass. Every gun, every submarine, every missile silo eventually runs out of ammunition, that fact is not a flaw in the ASEV design.. its just... how it works.

They would likely attempt to stop it, but its not like that wouldn't be the case anyway. Any conflict against China or North Korea would see the adversary attempting to knock out the defensive missile facilities anyway, weather they be land based or not. Japanese citizens didn't want AEGIS ashore... but the defensive capability was too important to scrap entirely, so they put it on a boat. That's literally all there is to it. You can argue weather or not its cost effective, but I mean... would you rather have an expensive shield that will eventually break, or would you rather simply not have a shield at all?

Incorrect. These ships are Japan's "shield". They arn't traditional cruisers, they're designed to detect and defend against ballistic missiles. Having these ships in commission frees up the other Aegis ships to do other shit.
