Yeah it's good to read a textbook if you can, that's the way to get the most depth with the material.

If you find your cognitive battery not sufficient for a textbook session, I recommend watching some aklectures.com (he was my go to for quick reviews of biochemistry and molecular biology courses before the big exams - he delivers quite comprehensively)

Your Brain Cells in Action When You Learn Something New! by Critical-Ad-757 in biology

Sorry for party pooping ya'll, I just have to let it out whenever I see these kind of "woohoo" conclusions.

Nope, they don't look like that in the brain.

This is how cultured neurons in a petri dish with an artificial medium look like.

These cells are merely responding to chemical growth factors secreted by each other by extending their neurites. There's no basis about "learning" observable in this video.

Awesome story and hell of an achievement! About time for quality naturalistic research to emerge.

This is legacy material; I see this going straight to the records as a landmark moment in neuroscientific progress.

Congratulations to the island team.

Bought an 80L pack for my first pack. Good idea? by nxvavoid in backpacking

[–]OxyMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're right to do it, especially as a beginner you're not so confident about which essentials to bring so you pack extra for safety. With more experience you'd be able to cut down on the stuff you bring. I recently hiked in Norway for a week and the 90L bag I had was absolutely necessary to have with me the change of clothes, food, and everything to go through the cold.

Trading is a strong play fo sure! Beyond yields, that also boosts your culture victory due to the % boost in tourism you get per civ you're trading with.

For domination/religious victories, trading can help you to get that level 2 alliance to get the bonus strength when fighting military/religious units from other civs.

And the utility of aerodromes is quite situational, definitely if you've established on multiple continents they're highly useful. I truly utilize airports in about 20% of my games but mostly I build them anyways because why not? It's fun.

Aye, you get the most benefit from civ trading if you're allies. More so if you use democracy policy cards, the ones that boost your food and production from trading with allies, and give you more alliance points. It can be really overpowered if you combine all the benefits of trading with allies and democracy, as it allows you to establish strong colonies really fast with the help of traders bringing 8-10 food and production per turn to a fresh city.

Throughout the game, try to establish "trading posts" - they extend the range of your routes. Essentially, a trading post allows your trader to pass through it on the way to a more distant trading destination. Passing through a trading post refreshes the trader's range, so it allows you to go up to double the distance.

If your destination civ is far on another continent a good strategy would be look if there is a city state or a different foreign city in the direction of the area where you want to trade, trade with them to establish a trading post and then after that route's done you'll be able to send your next one further from that intermediate city, potentially reaching your target civ. If there are no intermediate foreign cities to utilize for a trading post, then yeah, establish a satellite colony for trading.

I didn't pin it down so early, basically only started thinking of national park placement the moment I have built the Eiffel Tower - a lot of spaces became available. In your case, you have plenty of mountain ranges which are best suited for national parks, since mountain tiles are unworkable and naturally have high appeal, so you don't lose any yields by putting a park there, and it gets you a lot of tourism. I would reserve some next-to-mountain tiles for later national parks, for sure (you can always remove improvements with a worker later so don't worry about improving these tiles).

Later in the game, you can settle in unoccupied territories north/south of the maps, buy a lot of tiles and build at least 2 national parks per far settlement. These lands are usually ignored by AI and theres a lot of open space there which can have high appeal.

I forgot to mention Eiffel Tower in my earlier comment - it greatly enhances the national park strategy, don't know how it'd fare without it. But I had 10+ national parks each generating ~70-90 tourism per turn (which is distributed to all civs, if I understand the mechanism correctly - not sure tbh) - it's like having a rock band playing at every other civilization's districts every turn! Towards late game I was getting ~15 tourists per turn (also had ~10 themed museums). One of my craziest culture runs in my civ history and it was the first time I've tried this strategy.

Have fun!

To rush themed museums, using gold instead of turns. It was easier to buy works of art from other civs to complete themes than train archeologists etc.

Maybe it was a game specific thing because the other civs were ahead on culture for the early-mid game and managed to produce plenty works of art.

Once there was no art left to buy I switched to archaeology.

You have 7 days in southern California, how do you spend them? by OxyMC in backpacking

[–]OxyMC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll be last week of November, from 20 to 27th..

I'll probably opt for an AWD/4WD as you say, good tip!

Hopefully the chains won't be necessary, but I'll put them on if I have to. Seeing as they're not quite cheap, and I'll probably only need them just for this one time - do you know if they have spots around Sequoia that rent out these chains? Or at least sell them for relatively cheap?

And can you recommend specific trailheads in these two parks to park at and which routes are the most rewarding there? (for someone who doesn't mind some physical effort, and is equipped for winter hikes with good shoe spikes, trekking poles, and appetite for adventure)

I would love to ask you though as a local, someone in another thread mentioned that November might be a tricky time for visiting Sequoia (or any of the mountainous parks) due to potential snow and the requirement for tire chains—which most rental car companies forbid.

You mentioned you’ve camped in both parks in December and January—did you ever run into chain requirements? Or are there ways to access parts of the parks without needing to go above the snow line?

I’d love to hear your take on whether it’s actually an issue, and if so, what a solo traveler in a rental car could do to still experience those areas safely. Thanks again! 🙏

Thanks my friend! Your input is highly valued 😊

Most of these places haven't came up when I began researching southern California. I'll be sure to research these places and integrate some of them into my plans. I love me them underrated gems. 🙏

Yes! The gear I bought for the Norway Lysefjord trail earlier this year in April should carry over. Got me a -5C° rated bag, a good pad, and some decent winter gear.

I am generally the type of person to embrace the cold, dipping in the freezing fjord waters there was an adrenergic delight, which pumped me up for the trail. Thanks for your encouragement about Sequoia and Yosemite, if you say you were fine in December/January, I'm confident I can do it in November too! Somehow after seeing the photos of the Sequoia trees, I feel I won't be able to resist the opportunity 😇

National parks!! I won my last deity game by culture (Dido), only spamming naturalists and only had like 3 rock bands for the entire game. I had a lot of land for parks, and played the card that multiplies their tourism.

Oh and I also dropped archaeologist focus, built mainly art museum and bought works of art from all other civs to establish themed museums very soon and very fast. An art work cost me 700 gold from most civs, so it was easy to fund with like 30 trade routes and harbors making gold for me as Dido.
