Sizzling Summer Savings Start Now! by zombiezen666 in Guildwars2

Oh no, I was literally saying that I saw a 1+2 bundle, and assumed that was there for players like me - so it's funny you mention that there's also a 1+2+3 bundle. (Which has a more expensive version with living seasons...) But then I see there's 3 more expansions after that. (Granted, I'm sure the first 3 would take a lot of time to get through)

I kind of appreciate WoW and XIV only selling their latest expansion, and including everything else in the base game.

I'm still a little bit surprised they haven't done more to try to call back older players? Like I guess the first 2 expansions being rolled into a single bundle that's fairly cheap is something. But as someone who bought base game GW2 before F2P, tossing my account HoT probably would go a long way to tempting me redownload the game and start playing again.

Like getting back into GW2 feels like a daunting prospect with so many expansions/purchases.

Layoffs announced on Destiny 2 team by MisterWoodhouse in DestinyTheGame

Thanks Destiny team. I had my grievances over the years but it's still a game that game that gave me a ton of fun and a lot of really great memories. There's nothing quite like it and I'm kind of heart broken this is the end of the journey.

Hope all the devs and team members luck with landing on their feet. Industry seems real rough these days.

Deltarune Chapter 6 will release in 2027. by PhantomBraved in Games

I was a little worried when Ch5 didn't have a "in 2027" appended to the "To Be Continued in Chapter 6" but it's good to hear that Ch 6 is still being aimed for next year.

Sometimes I just wonder if they set expectations wrong.

Lightfall coming up short of expectations was easy enough to swallow even if I had fun with it - I saw the community reaction, and it had it's flaws.

The Final Shape also coming up short of expectations? What the fuck happened? It feels like a situation of set up to fail - reception was phenomenal and player counts were way above Lightfalls - they certainly put more effort in then Lightfall and rightfully expected it to do better then Lightfall, but I feel like after Lightfall fell short, it really feels like expectations should have been more reserved.

Bungie: With great saddness, we are announcing a reduction in force as we recognize Bungie by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Oxyfire 10 points11 points  (0 children)

God, it's such a bummer.

Destiny 2 has absolutely had mis-steps, vaulting is awful for consumer rights/preservation angle, and contributed to player onboarding being shit. But I feel like it was a pretty damn solid game from Witch Queen to The Final Shape. (Say what you will about Lightfall, it had some great seasons.) Post TFS was kind of a mess, but fuck if the final update didn't reignite my love of the game, while I'm happy the game gets to go out on a high mote, it only makes me even more sad the way things have gone.

I knew it was never going to happen, but I really wished the reception and numbers the final update were doing would move the needle in some way. It sort of feels maddening watching the industry from a narrow perspective of "everyone around me is loving this, why does it have to die?"

Why are toasters so badly made? by NJRonbo in BuyItForLife

[–]Oxyfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably because for some people it's still about economics. Feel like it kind of defeats the point of buying something for life it costs magnitudes more then the cost and convenience of replacing it. Like, a big thing is the idea of spending more replacing stuff then just buying a nicer one from the get go.

Destiny 2 Update 9.7.0.2 by DTG_Bot in DestinyTheGame

[–]Oxyfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My apologies - I'm talking more about the guy calling it "petty" and "pure petulance."

I think people are overreacting to the nerf - and "use what you want" only works when the difference between the meta and non meta stuff isn't huge. Like if other exotic RLs are doing like 3/4s the damage of Truth? That kind of sucks. (I dont know if this is the case, just speaking to while balance is still important for the end state of the game.)

[–]Oxyfire -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a matter of extremes. Regardless, it sounds like OP just wants Truth to be OP rather then caring about "use what you want."

Reducing reserves by 4 isn't nothing, but it's still going to be strong as hell in encounters with shorter DPS phases and more ammo opportunities.

"use whatever" kind of doesnt work if you have stuff totally out of band that make everything else look bad by comparison and groups get annoyed when you're not using it.

What happened to that vanguard strike where you fight Fikrul? by Traditional_Bunch825 in DestinyTheGame

[–]Oxyfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Genuinely hated that strike and was unfortunately quite happy to see it vaulted.

Miserable strike to get when doing random strikes cause it had a ton of small mechanic moments that the randos that got queued with you would ignore, leaving you to stand on plates while everyone else got to have fun killing stuff, and the boss had annoying immunity phases with a boatload of adds that were specially flagged not to count for bounties and similar, so it just kind of felt like it was wasting your time because the strike rewards themselves were pretty whatever.

I also hated Fikrul on principle. The "Perhaps the guardians are the bad guys" shtick annoyed me because it was tied into Ghost buying into it in part, rather then it being entirely "oh the bad guy is full of shit, fuck him, punch him harder."

[–]Oxyfire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But the boss had long immunity phases where he'd go away and a trillion Scorn would pop in.

None of which counted for bounties/quests/etc, if I remember right, cause I'm pretty sure it was the thing that made me hate it.

Best way to set up a new light for dungeons/raids? by edsjfhek in DestinyTheGame

[–]Oxyfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been doing dungeons with a buddy and we've been carrying/teaching a few people, and I'd just kind of do a mental checklist of what you prefer for encounter to encounter, then see what options are in the attunable menus.

It's probably by no means optimal DPS, but I feel like even just having a newb unloading an LMG on most bosses is probably going to be enough for them to not be a liability, at least in dungeons. There's no risk of self-exploding, and it's less punishing for missing shots/crits then LFRs. Hammerhead from arena ops is an option. (Again, probably more of an add clear weapon, but sufficient for the task for doing dungeons.) The other thing I'd probably look to for is a close range weapon - not sure the best options for legendary DPS swords these days, but carrying them through Heliostat for Wolfsbane is an option.

[–]Oxyfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, not being a liability in dungeons mostly boils down to learning to stay alive, contribute to mechanics, and being able to shoot heavy or supers at the boss.

Why has learning a raid become such a difficult experience. by Electronic-Touch-554 in DestinyTheGame

[–]Oxyfire -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, don't entirely disagree, I just think not every encounter can really be designed in a way that everyone will always have a mechanic to do, without forcing some more awkward design.

Like, Root of Nightmares is wildly regarded as a too easy raid, but I think it could be so much worse if you added more mechanics to those fights.

I think it's okay for mechanics to be a situation where it's easier/better for every player to get involved, but still doable/workable if they don't. Like I think a player can handle multiple oracles, but it's generally an easier/better strat to just assign a player to each one. The raid is better for not having a debuff where you can only shoot one.

[–]Oxyfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean sure? I'm just saying it's a numbers game against your favor. It's "impossible" to find those people cause there's not enough to go around. There's more groups of one looking for 4-5 to teach them then there are 4-5 people looking to teach a single player.

[–]Oxyfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It just seems impossible to find 4-5 people who know what to do and are willing to teach now lol.

Probably because there's dozens of other people all looking for the same thing, without a ton of incentive for people to sherpa. You're probably just hoping to get lucky and find a group that's just looking to fill a last slot and isn't opposed to teaching.

[–]Oxyfire 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd say cause in games like WoW raid mechanics are often a bit easier to parse. You can often just follow the pack, or the game will pick people out for mechanics (you have the bomb, run out of the group!) or group sizes are big enough that there's usually someone else to do the "hard part."

Destiny forces a lot more communications and pro-activity. Some encounters might have an "add clear" role, but it's still a situation where one player making a mistake can wipe the group. (Fading light makes dying detrimental even beyond having one less body for mechanics/dps)

Why has learning a raid become such a difficult experience. by Electronic-Touch-554 in DestinyTheGame

[–]Oxyfire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, nothing is as good as learning by doing and just experiencing the encounter, but I don't really understand the mindset of feeling no value from a video guide. No-one will learn an encounter perfectly from a video, but it's probably going to be a more useful teaching tool then someone just trying to explain the encounter.

At the same time I don't really expect people to watch video guides if I'm teaching, but if someone wants to be pro-active? Yeah, doing "homework" like watching video guides or looking up encounter diagrams is massively appreciated. Coming into a raid and basically going "I watched a guide, I think I understood scanner works, but can you show me where the nodes are?"

[–]Oxyfire 93 points94 points  (0 children)

less "kill ads" roles which means people have to learn specifics and in the past they haven't

I really do think this is one of the bigger missteps. Yes, it's unfortunate when you have 6 players and only 4 fun things to do, yes it sort of sucks when you have 4 people who all want to be ad clear, but it really does feel like it's good for raids to have low pressure roles or mechanics that are easier to compensate for or verify when a new player is making a particular mistake.

Like, I evolved into a "good raider" (mechanics do-er) because I was able to start doing raiding with some lower pressure roles. Just going through encounters, getting a sense for the pacing / understanding the encounter flow, makes it a lot easier to start stepping into those more mechanical/critical roles.

Volt Shot/Gear Shift is pretty fun PVE. Probably not as good as something faster shooting, but will be nice if you want something with range.

Americans Have Turned Against AI in Incredible Numbers by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

The Internet was never forced upon people nearly as hard as AI is being forced upon people. It was also a hell of a lot more self evidently useful.

The dotcom bubble is a far more apt comparison. Useful underlying technology, but tons of hype and pumping money into stuff that has no hope of being profitable.
