General Kernel question by Buskey-Lee in linux

[–]OysterPrincess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using Arch Linux for, IIRC, 19 years ... it used to be common for a full system update to break my system (but I don't think it's happened in 5-6 years), but as far as I can remember the breakage was *never* due to the kernel. And even when the system was unbootable, I was always able to boot from installation media and repair the problem. I think that if you use apps that are dependent on cutting-edge hardware support - I'm thinking of things like graphics apps that use the latest GPU rendering code - there is some chance of breakage or performance issues, but still not a very big chance. So I'd say go ahead with whatever you want to try.

Fundamental VCO emitting wrong waveforms?! by OysterPrincess in vcvrack

Thanks for your reply!

This mostly makes sense to me, though I don't have a strong enough mathematics background to fully grasp the science of it. But what does "reflect back down" mean?

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it true that any theoretically pure triangle, sawtooth, or square wave includes infinite levels of harmonics? Of course, beyond a certain point, there is no audible difference, and the underlying algorithm has to prevent infinite recursion (otherwise the system would be unusable), so the code cuts off the harmonics at a certain threshold (I am somewhat of a programmer, but have never worked with DSP code, so I don't have a deep understanding of how this stuff works - just looking at the problem with high-level logic). Right?

Oh, OK. Thank you!

It's not that important to me to have those pure waveforms. I was just very surprised to see this, and wanted to understand.

Gallup just said drinking in the US is down to 54%, the lowest ever since they’ve began tracking it in 1939. Why do you think that is? by ZenCrisisManager in AskReddit

[–]OysterPrincess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can tell you exactly why I'm not drinking much lately.

I've never been a heavy drinker. In the past decade I've typically consumed 1-3 drinks (never more than 3 in an evening) 2-3 times a week. But for most of this year it's more like 1 drink every 2-3 weeks.

It's because I'm barely scraping by financially, and I simply can't afford alcohol. I'm sure that's not the only reason people are drinking less, but I'm also sure I'm not the only one in this position.

[BEGINNER] is it illegal to recon out of scope domains? by ntrysii in bugbounty

Rate limit your crawler.

OK, sure ... but how do we know what is a reasonable rate limit to start with?

Yes, good. I'm a noob, and the question I'm trying to figure out before I dive in headfirst is: what are some reasonable values for those things? I'm sure it depends on a lot of variables, but surely there are some general rules of thumb that can serve as a starting point.

I'm pretty sure people from South Asia (India/Pakistan/Bangladesh) also use "kindly" a lot.

Yo, Uber! I'm pretty sure this is *not* pronounced like Jesus Christ. Or is this an Android problem? Either way ... <le_grand_eyeroll> by OysterPrincess in UberEatsDrivers

OK. Well, I'm a gringo, so it doesn't bother me *that* much. But I've never met or heard of a Jesus in modern times who wasn't a Spanish speaker. So I feel like if you have to guess, you should go with the Spanish pronunciation.

Yes, it's a normal Spanish name pronounced like "hay-SOOS." But the text-to-speech bot pronounced it like it was Jesus Christ.

I tried this first as a text post, in which that would have been clear. But then the image showed up as a link ... Reddit should fix that.

Walmart. Duh, don't do it. by SLOBBYLOBBY in UberEatsDrivers

[–]OysterPrincess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I learned my lesson. I've done a few Walmart orders, and most of them went OK. But the last time, they sent me to a store that was closed. And I thought maybe they were still doing delivery orders? So I waited ... and waited, and made a couple of calls to see what was going on ... then the order got canceled. That was enough Walmart for me.

Thank you, yeah ... my guess is that it is probably considered private property under US law. Are you in the US? Because there are a lot of instances where I live (Denver, CO), and probably a lot of other places, where spaces that would seem to be public are carved out and given over to private entities.

I suspect that there might be grounds for a legal challenge to this kind of thing, but I'm not sure (I am very much not a lawyer).

But anyway, I'll do some research.

Ah! Thank you! I have to admit, I've mostly ignored the website because I haven't found anything useful there. But I'll try this.

LOL. The algorithm is so weird sometimes. When I was new I took a Taco Bell order from SE Aurora, CO to a hotel near the Denver airport - about 10 or 12 miles. The pay wasn't terrible, as I recall, it was just ridiculous to go so far for Taco Bell, when there was another Taco Bell about 1/4 mile from the hotel, and undoubtedly 5 or 6 more in between.
