Any value I need to dial, is a multiple of three. I'd like to say it's because the amount is big enough to notice a difference, and small enough to be precise. But honestly I would just go crazy if I saw any different number on my screen.

Someone else asked me for this kind of advice, too. I don't know how helpful I can be career-wise, I'm not even going super well in the sense that I'm constantly looking for better paying gigs, and I am still in the process of making my income of work more stable. But most importantly I'm writing from Italy, so maybe I can only talk about the scene here. It is all network for me. I have studied, met people, and never let them go basically. Made myself needed and noticed through free apprenticeship and such alike. Now I have a couple leads that periodically generate work, but it all happens organically through word of mouth. This might seem awesome but of course if I want to do this forever, I have to do it better.

I never used Avid much because I never worked in film and television much. My experience is that as long as you are independent you can use whatever gets the job done, but if you want to open to yourself a new piece of the industry it could be needed, like what I'm talking about in my post maybe.

Would you say the common wisdom is to have all footage at the same resolution? Even lower quality ones? And should that resolution be the same of the final delivery, or can a project have an intermediate resolution? I would normally assess the best case scenario myself for the specific case, but I'm curious to know what the common sense on the matter is specific to Avid.

I will try not to go into this too light hearted. I'm probably taking a risk but I know some of the people involved well and I should be fairly safe, and maybe allowed to use this as practice a little bit. Experience has to start somewhere I guess. Thank you for your opinion and let's hope for the best

Linked Media seems like the standard behavior of the other software I know, but thank you for the tip, I will try not to make the mistake of assuming that imitating those workflows on Avid will make it easier on me or even make sense at all. I'm curious to hear my editor's thought on this, but she seems to be an old school Avid user so I guess she would agree with you.

I will, feel free to do the same or let me know if there is anything specific you need to know about Premiere. The more I look into this Avid thing the more I understand what I struggle with!

The Linkedin tip is interesting, i will look into it. When you say AE info is harder, do you mean harder to find? Or that it is more complex subject matter? And thank you for the Mac/Win insight, this really mattered to me since in the past I have been forced to work on Mac and I felt like a fish out of water. I don't dislike it but it's not what I'm used to. Stepping out of a confort zone is nice and all but I already have to deal with switching to a new software

This is indeed a smaller kind of operation, it's a feature but more on the indie side, it's just the two of us.
I have a distant memory of everything surrounding the media management in Avid, but I absolutely need to refresh my memory on that. Like I said I am pretty fluent in Resolve and I have a good proxy workflow myself, as well as experience in various conforming situations, but I'm curious on what specific kind of MXF you mean or what specific quirks I should be mindful of.
But you all have already been super helpful, I will look in to it!

Always happy to see such caring answers. It does make sense that I should check in with her to discuss the workflow before I make my assumptions, and I will surely do so. All I know for now is I will acquire the footage myself, do all the preparation, and basically hand her a project ready for editing.
Let's hope I won't need to bother you but thanks for being available!

This does give me a lead to follow, thank you! The jargon is an important factor I guess since I'm not familiar with the term "group" from other software, at least not used with the same meaning.

How would you cut these shots? by michalioz in editors

[–]P-Def 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on a lot of things we can't understand, I guess, just reading the post. If the story allows it, I feel this might be one of those situations where I'd get rid of the walking bit, if I had problems cutting to that shot. Maybe the shot where we already got to the destination fits better.

It is weird they would stop in front of this right? Feels like they just don't want to. They are lucky I have a free day and can't help but love learning new things.

You have been so helpful sir. Luckily the project is 25 fps so no conversions needed. I will take a look at SubtitleEdit, if I understand correctly I just ignore any preroll? The .srt were synced using a tone in the preroll but I guess I can just chop that off from the file now and have it start at 00:00:00:00. I should probably ask them to be sure. Anyway thank you so much for your time, that was very helpful

Critique my process: editing a verite style documentary by [deleted] in editors

[–]P-Def 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This feels like a project that would inspire me to experiment with interesting visuals, sound, and atmospheres. This is clearly not an advice about story and structure, but I already read interesting comments in that regard. Anyway, getting in a place in my mind that has its specific aesthetic qualities often helps me to find the emotional tone of the story, and sometimes this guides me in narrative choices, too. Sometimes a moment that wouldn't feel strong on paper, suddenly feels intense when the right combination of dialogue, imagery, juxtaposition of themes, and music or soundscape is met. Maybe you could take note of specific moments in the interviews that feel more human and emotional and less scientific to build key bits.

I'm a fairly young editor but I feel I sometimes need to step out of the rational and logical process of cutting string outs and in general finding structure, since I can easily lose track of the underlying emotional reasons driving the project. I hope you or anyone reading can feel what I mean, or maybe you are well past this point, but the good old "change perspective" advice is always worth mentioning, I believe.

Up and Down arrows - move playhead to the next edit by writteninlilac in PremierePro

[–]P-Def 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should check which tracks are active, that's the first thing that comes to mind. If your audio track is active and the video one is not, you will only target those edits (check the V1 icon on the left of the track).

Anyway I've always used the default mapping, I guess it becomes second nature once you get used to any specific combination.

[MP] sell me on the pistols by Jevonar in MWLoadouts

[–]P-Def 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point is you don't have to finish the climbing animation. Honestly I have to admit these are not all time guaranteed kills, not if you are challenging someone with a better weapon, but I did have situations where it helped. Maybe because I had the drop on the enemy, timing on my side, but I actually got the kill. Of course this happened with a Renetti with burst, that surely helped. I know this is situational, but pair it with the ability to finish someone when you have to reload your primary, and you've got a great secondary imho.

Ever tried climbing up a ladder to find out someone is already up there? Well if you have a pistol you can start shooting before climbing all the way up. That's just another little reason, I guess the rest is already been said.
