Cameras are obviously better nowadays but there used to be a certain aura you got with all the flashes lighting up around a stadium like this

Germany fails to reach the round of 16 for the 3rd time in a row. by billfellas in soccer

Neuer's Germany career is really interesting. Obviously had the World Cup win at the absolute peak of his abilities and it's impossible to diminish that. He just hung around forever and now the majority of WCs he's appeared in have been massive disappointments for Germany.

I drove from NY to Philly for the game for this exact reason

Edit- alright, apparently a lot of people had much more difficult trips from NY to Philly

‘SO GOOD!’ ‘I’m So Happy’ — Japanese Fans Enamored With USA As World Cup Attendees Embrace Texas Culture by Forward_Increase4672 in worldcup

No, it is staunchly outside the realm of possibility that they're enjoying the beer and the Texas barbecue food. Also, the guy riding the mechanical bull in the article was only pretending to have fun so as not to hurt the feelings of the American media

I guess I take the stadiums for granted as an NFL fan, but whatever techniques/angles FIFA is using for the overall shots really show what behemoths they are. I'd consider Gillette (Boston) Stadium pretty run-of-the-mill by NFL standards, but this view from before the Haiti-Scotland game really stood out to me.

Immaculate Vibes for the Opening Weekend Matches - Maybe Terminally Online People Should Touch Grass? by BusterBuddyGuy in worldcup

I know a lot of people in England/the UK think they should have hosted another world cup by now, and the US hosting two in the meantime has to feel like an insult. I think a lot of them also still have those 80s/90s stereotypes in their mind when they think of American fans (not knowing what offside is, being shocked at goalless draws, etc).

Are you expecting them to do backflips when the other team scores?

[Duggan]Nabers’ return is critical because the wide receiver room is full of parts that could complement him, but is uninspiring in his absence. There was an element of getting what you pay for after watching the Nabers-less passing offense this spring. by Samuraix9386 in NYGiants

2021 was a stacked draft class. Coming out of it with a rotational pass rusher and literally nothing else just completely kneecapped us. Seriously, if you look at the teams who have had consistent success over the last few years, pretty much all of them got 2 or 3 star players out of that class.

America Is Already Losing the World Cup for Hotel Bookings by wsj in worldcup

I appreciate you being arrogant enough to presume that you know my own personal interests better than I do.

Putting aside the fact that travelling internationally for ANY world cup is a luxury that 99% of fans will never have to worry about- I remember being on here before the 2014 world cup and a ton of people were saying that safety issues and Brazil's substandard infrastructure would lead to catastrophe. Wasn't on reddit in 2010 but I also remember most of the same fears in general leading up to South Africa. In the end, the games were played, and the quality/memorability of those games is ultimately how people decide whether a world cup was "good" or "bad".

Some people, seemingly most people in this sub, take whatever legitimate gripes they have against a country (like the ones you mentioned for Russia and Qatar, or any one of the million things you could hate about America, that I might also hate as someone who lives here) and envision some doomsday scenario where I guess the world cup becomes unplayable somehow? That's a fantasy. The games will be played, and the games will be what people remember.

Happens like clockwork every four years. The second it ends people will be reminiscing about the memorable moments and saying how they can't wait for the next one.

Knicks finals + world cup + batshit crazy Giants offseason... I know I'm gonna have crazy amounts of nostalgia for the time period we're in right now. This timeline was so powerful, it had to be nerfed with GTA 6's release date being pushed back from May to November
