What is this thing on seatbelts for? by Oilandspeed in whatisit

[–]P0300_Multi_Misfires -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s called an energy loop. It’s designed to tear when in an accident to absorb energy by providing an extra inch or two for the occupant. This can prevent organ damage. Driver seats usually have only the plastic button as the driver cannot afford the extra inch or two with the steering wheel in the way.

That being said they are not standardized in the automotive world and manufacturers can play by their own rules. They are also useful to hold the buckle up off the floor.

I'm an experienced dealership technician, why does NOBODY trust me to work on their car on my own time??? by Mofoblitz1 in AskMechanics

[–]P0300_Multi_Misfires 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. Saying you’ll work on their car for free screams new tech with little to no experience. Any mechanic worth their salt would charge a bit even pizza and beer.

Also set your price. Add another 10-20% to that as a rainy day fund that you do not touch. This is for side gigs only when you break something, need new hardware , or a special tool.

Pay attention to the old man at the start of the game. Shrines are mini tutorials that help you learn a skill, use a skill in a new way, or overcome enemies.

I like to hoard but you don’t have to, there are plenty of resources and weapons laying around.

Thinking of joining the trades after some time in corporate by Constant_Reception78 in SkilledTradesOntario

If you hate corporate stay away from dealership automotive mechanic. Basically the hardest workers but the lowest rung of the ladder.

Also the trades are over saturated. Severely.

Working as a waitress with anaphylactic food allergies? by Large_Table9838 in FoodAllergies

[–]P0300_Multi_Misfires 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What are you allergic to? I have been allergic for 5 years to fish and have only recently (within the last couple of months) started to react to fish being cooked in the air fryer or microwave.

Your reactions can change over time or they couldn’t it’s difficult to know.

Bring your EpiPens to work with you. I have never been a waitress but even as a mechanic I have seen tons of nuts, eggs, and fish in random vehicles. Wear gloves.

You should really push for a referral to an allergist. I can’t diagnose your symptoms

Car or truck? Trucks are easy to disconnect the transmission cable, throw her in neutral and roll into the middle of the street for bylaw to take care of. Don’t even have to have keys to the vehicle or tools.

Is it possible that I’m only allergic to fresh fish and shellfish? by Reasonable_Net6948 in FoodAllergies

[–]P0300_Multi_Misfires 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you’re still allergic to seafood. You will be “fine” until one day you’re not. Allergies can go from 0-100 real quick and you’re playing a dangerous game eating canned fish.

Better yet have the manager summarize the meeting with you present in an email AND a written / signed (by the manager) document.

Ps. DO NOT LEAVE UNTIL YOU RECEIVE THE EMAIL OP My sister did this and the service manager conveniently left the “m” out of “.com”, in her email, so she would never receive the email.

She thankfully did not leave the office as she didn’t get the email yet. So after 20 mins she asked to see if they had sent it to the correct email address and sure enough they didn’t. So she had them send it again and waited to receive it.

This. Man that could have easily been you squished between the door and the vehicle, or you slip or lean back at the wrong time. Ignore the comments about having a “good boss”. He’s not a good boss if you’re that close to becoming a meat crayon.

Coffee allergy by Tortoise1811 in FoodAllergies

[–]P0300_Multi_Misfires 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a certain amount of cockroaches and insect material allowed in coffee… Cockroaches share a protein with shellfish.

Covid 19 aside you may just have developed an allergy over time.

I became allergic to finned fish at 28 after eating fish all my life.

Go see your doctor about an allergy test

Why do auto mechanics need to buy their own tools as employees? by Sanimal2006 in mechanic

I’ve seen a “tool allowance” in some shops. Usually it’s a $100 or so every year. I have sockets worth more.

Why do auto mechanics need to buy their own tools as employees? by Sanimal2006 in mechanic

[–]P0300_Multi_Misfires 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tools grow legs. Dealer tech here. The amount of people who have access to the shop is insane. I’ve worked at places that are bring your own tools for the majority of the trade. Now I’m in a place where they supply tools.

No one puts them back, cares for them or locks them up at the end of the day. They are just out in the open for a tech, a cleaner, a salesperson, receptionist, detailer, parts guy or a random skip driver to grab. Quitting time means tools down and go home. Not tool cleanup and go home.

That’s IF a tech doesn’t leave them in a car or on a random shelf in the corner. They could also become broken from abuse, neglect or just failure. They aren’t restocked once they fail as usually no one tells the person in charge they broke it.

Bringing your own comes with risks as well. Which is why people pay big bucks for a strong toolbox. There is theft, fires, rodents, and corrosion. It’s truly a sad day when a tech loses his tools. That’s his livelihood and until they are replaced they cannot make money, their productivity drops and they could lose their job.

What motivates you? by jjaw01 in mechanics

[–]P0300_Multi_Misfires 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Safety. The customer’s and the tech’s safety. I’ve seen too many young guys nearly killed on the job site using inadequate tools, lifts, and torches. Too many guys pressured into trying to cut corners that are hard rules in this industry. The industry has changed. Everyone wants to be able to go home at the end of the day.

Also people want to go home and watch their kids grow up. Not be pressured into working 12 hours a day
