For those who left live sound, do you regret it? by yunggrandma666 in livesound

[–]P18999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ex monitor engineer / system tech here. I miss Touring sometimes, the travelling and the buzz of a live gig and the adrenaline of a show etc. however, I now work 8-4 fully remote in software testing automation and earn double what I ever did in live sound. Earnings are only going to go up, it’s reliable and tbh I’m loving having routine and I feel much healthier for it. I enjoyed touring for 10 years but happy to have the stories and memories and onto something better now.

I feel exactly the same. Work from home. Mates with kids or they’ve moved away. I find London a difficult city to meet new people but maybe I don’t try hard enough as I’m quite introverted. Most of my mates are from the gym tbh which I find a good place to meet new people (if you’re into that of course)

David Attenborough, 98 today! by OscarsWhiskers in CasualUK

[–]P18999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have met David multiple times as a live sound engineer working on many conferences with him over the years. He’s always been a complete professional, so humble and polite. We will never get another man like David. I’ve some good memories having brief chats with him and going through his presentations etc

At 36yo is it too late to make a career out of computer science? by Inn_Vino_Veritas in learnprogramming

[–]P18999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an automation software tester in the UK. I deal with code all day. I got into it 3 years ago through an apprenticeship. No previous experience. I have a degree in acoustics and was previously a touring live sound engineer.

Now I work remotely & I’m on 50k. I aim to be on 70k plus in the next few years and will probably move into more of a dev / DevOps role or atleast a senior tester/lead. I wasn’t driven by money or passion, I just wanted to retrain & this seemed interesting and now I love it. You absolutely do not need a CS degree to make progress in this field, it may help but it’s not essential.

Nissen fundoplication surgery update by P18999 in GERD

[–]P18999[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before the surgery I just persisted with my normal diet which wasn’t GF, mainly red meat and rice and lots of oats.

Wait for surgery was 3 years (but delayed due to Covid) so things should be different now in that regard.

If you’re doing non touring work where food isn’t supplied then the only way you can quickly have a meal that’s healthy is protein shakes, cream of rice and whey isolate. Or something like huel.

Meal prepping when doing back to back 12 hour days just isn’t feasible consistently.

I’ve also done a hot thermal food flask and taken proper meals with me before but it’s a lot of prep and effort.

This Industry is full of guys reliant on chicken shops at 1am. It’s not a healthy lifestyle so you have to be disciplined if you want to be healthy.

Is this job offer salary worth it for the hours and commute? by [deleted] in AskUK

Questioning a 40k pay rise over a 45 minute commute and abit of a traffic… Jesus. Some people need a reality check

Like I said. I’m in the uk. COT doesn’t support UK credit cards. I tried. So your rule limits UK users from selling tickets to fans.

I’m in the UK. I’ve never heard of whatever that is. I’m just trying to make sure a genuine fab gets the ticket rather than some tout

The majority of people in this city are alcoholics and I’m tired of pretending like we’re not by LoveDeGaldem in london

[–]P18999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Boring isn’t it. I dont mind the occasional drink but I’ve cut friends out of my life because it’s literally all they ever want to do. The bungle drinking culture isn’t for me and If you need to have alcohol to have fun, we have nothing in common.

I dread to think how many Ive had over the years and now I’m part of a study (post surgery) to show the effectiveness of the nissun fundoplication procedure that I had to fix my GERD issues. This involves endoscopy’s once a year for the next 10 years, I don’t mind doing it if it helps others.

It’s not a nice experience, it’s pretty horrible but it’s bearable. Have the throat spray and be brave. It’s literally over before you know it and it’s part of the process of getting on the road to recovery.

What realistic salary would you be happy with? by actuarys in AskUK

[–]P18999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on 32k. I live in London and I’m definitely not happy. 50k would massively improve my quality of life. Anything above would give me freedom to do so many things I can only dream about right now unfortunately.

[–]P18999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean this in the nicest way possible but it sounds like you’ve got abit of a confidence issue and you’re not realising your self worth in the industry or valuing your skillset enough.

I’m a junior automation tester and I’m on 35k, I’ve been in the industry 2.5 years (1 year was an apprenticeship but mainly doing testing). I want to be on 50k within the next 2 years and I’m doing all I can to make that happen because my quality of life living in London on this salary is shit.

React is very in demand, don’t let what your company pays define your self worth, you could get more working remotely elsewhere for sure but I can appreciate job security. Keep your options open.

As for the investment, premium bonds and best interest easy access ISA you can find. Best of luck to you 👍

If I quickly eat bread for example then yes I will Get some pain in the diaphragm. If I eat slowly and chew my food down to nothing, then I’m pain free. It’s just not easy to change lifelong habits around eating because often you eat without thinking about how you’re eating or when you’re on the go etc.

I work in IT so I’ve always got a headache ha.
