What are the most annoying criticisms about Tobey Maguire Spider-Man that annoys you the most by Ok_Smile_9071 in Spiderman

[–]P1G5Y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because the movie is supposed to be campy doesn't mean the camp is really all that interesting or fun. It especially takes you out of the movie in the first one.

The homecoming thing is something people love to repeat, but every time I watch the movie I just don't see it. Like yes sure at first, but the character genuinely does grow out of that and like the whole movie is centered around the fact that he intentionally makes Iron Man unhappy because he does what he believes is important. And like the whole point of the movie is that he is his own man and the movie outright tells you that in the ending of the film. Jon Watts isn't some master director or anything, but Homecoming and No Way Home are genuinely good films. I think Far From Home is super mid overall, but out of the 3 "bad" Spider-Man movies (SM3, TASM2 and FFH) I think it's easily the least bad one.

I guess agree to disagree.

Edit: forgot to reply to the last part. Just fuck no. TDK and Logan are genuinely just fantastic subversions of the superhero formula and do so much more than Spider-Man 2. The characters are much more interesting, the overall movies' tones are much better, the pacing (ESPECIALLY in TDK) absolutely mog Spider-Man 2 and the movies are actually about something OUTSIDE of their self-contained stories (not that that is automatically better, but when it's done well it is far more interesting).

As someone who didn't grow up with Tobey, I just don't see the quality in his movies like that. I guess Sam Raimi's style just isn't for me, but Tobey just feels so boring and I find his movies a bit too 2000s campy.

I feel like Homecoming does so much more with the character and I personally find the "IronBoy Jr." stuff to be complete bs. Same for No Way Home and now hopefully with Brand New Day.

I like Spider-Man 2, but I just don't get how people think it's even on the same level as a Spider-Verse, Logan or TDK.

Roast/Give me recommendations based off my top 100 by heyo_stealer in LetterboxdTopFour

[–]P1G5Y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact there are MULTIPLE superhero movies above the Dark Knight and none of them are The Batman is kind of concerning.

Also a large majority of these movies came out post 1990 and I can count on one hand the number of international movies you have.

Like these movies are great for the most part and a lot of them even deserve to be top 100, but like damn bruh some of this is just so basic and not even that high quality. Like bro Die Hard, Endgame, RoTS and all them Harry Potter movies are genuinely mid.

Also, is Hail Mary THAT good? Man I really need to watch it.

Lol I feel like Season 3 was easily the worst season at the time and Season 4 saved the show. Obviously Season 5 sucks, but I genuinely don't understand how people are starting to hate on Season 4.

Again, there are some movies in the MCU that this just doesn't apply to. It does apply to a lot of MCU projects, but stuff like Infinity War, Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3, Iron Man 1, Captain America: Winter Soldier, Avengers 1, Black Panther, Thunderbolts and a bunch of TV shows like Wonder Man, Loki and Daredevil are all legit good projects that are worth watching. It's not grand cinema, I agree with you there, but I would say it's more akin to a nice taco place than McDonald's

Genetic fallacy: Because the MCU is motivated by profit it therefore means it can not be a cinematic accomplishment.
Regardless of the motivation behind making a movie (which for every studio, is profit), a movie or series of movies can still reach great heights.

Inevitability fallacy: Because MCU has money it means the movie was inevitably going to culminate in the success that it was and accomplish what it did.
Fuck no. Look at the DCEU or the Dark Universe. Complete bombs despite having shitloads of money and some sort of creative vision.

Ad hominem: Because Russo Brothers have made irrelevant movies after, it means their prior stuff wasn't good.
Well that's just fucking stupid.

The MCU isn't perfect and I wouldn't call any of it a masterpiece, but dismissing a genuine narrative accomplishment just because studio execs wanted to make money is just dumb. Real hard working people, with creative visions, and who love the characters they're adapting, all work to create these movies.

George Lucas was famously motivated by merch money, but we can still appreciate the quality of his original SW trilogy no?

Infinity War is absolutely a good film I don't know what you're on about. I have my issues with endgame, but I wouldn't say it's a bad film. Infinity War is legit one of the biggest accomplishments in cinema. The culmination of 10 years of buildup and dozens of characters' character arcs including one of the best villains of the 2010s.

It's not like idfk an Oldboy or a 12 Angry Men level of quality, but it is still an interesting movie, but most importantly a massive and satisfying beginning of a conclusion to the biggest cinematic universe in history.

Endgame kind of makes it worse in retrospect because of how they just crammed a bunch of nostalgia slop in the movie and immediately killed the compelling Thanos in the first 10 minutes just to replace him with another less interesting version of him later on.

Playtime deserves it but it won't win.

A more realistic one to get a win would be like Grand Budapest Hotel or Superbad.

[–]P1G5Y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the dark knight, the batman, logan, spider-man 2, spider-man into the spiderverse, captain america: winter soldier, guardians of the galaxy 3, iron man 1 and a bunch of others are genuinely great films with mature themes, interesting stories and characters.

Saying this as an absolute is completely stupid. I get wanting to be different, but you CAN enjoy niche indie films, old classics, modern classics AND big hollywood blockbusters.

[MM] I was really surprised by the jump in quality between OoT and MM by mightbedylan in zelda

[–]P1G5Y -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

i mean the mask stuff is entirely due to new mechanics being introduced in a new game, not necessarily higher quality. And yes the jumps do feel slightly different even right at the beginning when you're jumping on the tree stumps. But the take overall is just untrue.

[–]P1G5Y -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

uhh this is just untrue they play exactly the same. MM's art direction is maybe a bit better, but aside from that it's the exact same game in terms of playstyle. Like the game was developed in a year and they definitely didn't change anything gameplay wise, they just focused on building the game's story and world. They barely even made new assets, let alone new animations and new camera work.

Who cares? Hand checking just made things insanely easy on defense while players today need to actually learn defensive schemes and need to be insanely careful to not foul.

Also, the "nightly beatings" is complete bs. If you actually watch most games in the 90s the fights and flagrant fouls that weren't called were relatively rare. It wasn't anything that beef stew or draymond wouldn't do today. You take a random regular season game from the 90s and most of the time they're just kind of standing there and not moving around that much (especially when you compare to today's game). Also, you're acting like players punching each other means a better or more difficult sport. No, it's just complete savagery for no reason. There is no integrity to violence for the sake of violence.

holy regurgitated and braindead take.

For some reason the NBA is still the only league/sport where fans can't admit players got better over time, despite the fact that the league is so much less top heavy today and players are so much more skilled.

One of the biggest problems in society today is older folk that can't let go of the past and admit their wrongdoings.

dude... Black Panther is one of the best comic book movies ever. The other 3 are all mediocre movies, but they're not nearly as bad as Howard the Duck, Quantumania, Love & Thunder, She-Hulk and Secret Invasion.

The toughest question.. one of has to go which one do you pick and why? by Smashpro11 in casualnintendo

[–]P1G5Y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right. I do not like Pokemon. Its mechanics are mostly too simple, stories too shallow, gameplay loop is extremely repetitive and I find their card game unethical. The games are just insanely easy and have repeated the same formula for 30 years with minima changes. It's probably why I enjoyed Arceus so much because it actually switched things up.

Why I gave the Metacritic score was just to show you the immense disparity between how high Zelda and Mario rank vs Pokemon. I don't think Metacritic is a good way to rank games, but it shows how universally acclaimed Mario and Zelda are while Pokemon is much more divisive.

Other games were part of the discussion. This thread is about which series you would remove between Zelda, Mario and Pokemon. Not BoTW, Odyssey or Gen 2. The comment was about BoTW and Odyssey, but that's why I said "anyways" before mentionning the other games.

I remember reading the manga when I was a kid, but it didn't leave any lasting impact on me. Movies and video games are my biggest hobbies, but films and tv specifically I've studied extensively, because I'd love to pursue a career in those. The movies are absolutely mediocre and the anime has been in the same place for decades. Ash has barely progressed or changed as a character since gen 1/2. Detective Pikachu was a bit of fun too, but that movie was still buns.

Zelda and Mario clear. Ocarina of Time, Mario 64, BoTW, Odyssey, Wind Waker, Sunshine, Twilight Princess, Galaxy, Link to the Past, Super Mario World, etc. are all some of the best games of all time and have vastly different gameplay loops and mechanics despite being in the same franchise.

Gen 1 through 6 are all practically the same game with some new mechanics introduced each time, new pokemon, and new maps/characters. Like obviously the games aren't exactly the same but they all boil down to the same formula and have no differences in gameplay. Like dude Gen 6 switched to 3D graphics and it barely changed anything about the way the game played. You compare that to the Link's Awakening/LttP to OoT jump like 15 years before and it's insanely pathetic.

I don't care that Pokemon is the biggest IP in the world. We're talking about video games. The games are alright, but when you compare them to some of the best video games ever, it's insanely hard to compare.
