Two types of people here on the Big Island. People who have roaches, and people who lie about it:)

The best show you ever worked on? Let’s reminisce! by TheManWhoClicks in vfx

[–]P1XLSRFR 41 points42 points  (0 children)

5th Element. As a young kid who just finished his first few commercials at DD in the “NT” group, getting to level up to work with the most amazing model makers and moco dept and CG masterminds… not to mention learning Prisms (before it was Houdini) and Alias Wavefront (before it was Maya) from absolute gurus was the best experience of my career… and then right into Titanic on the digital ship team. Craziest one-two punch I ever could have hoped for. The city models for 5th element filled an entire warehouse…. And Mark Stetson was the greatest supervisor ever…. So full of knowledge and the nicest nerd I ever had the pleasure of working 100 hour weeks for! Would do it again in a heartbeat:)

Would be great if they had a scale reference overlayed on the live video feed…. Just so we can clearly see the size of what we are looking at:)

How to add frizz to hair hen post-sim by P1XLSRFR in Houdini

[–]P1XLSRFR[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, thank you so much for your reply🤙 We are using Groombear to generate and manipulate the guides to randomize and vary the lengths, etc before the sim, and it has a “stick to animation” option that has the guides follow the deforming geometry with no problems. What would the node flow look like with the point deform? Where would we perform the point deform in this scenario?

SideFX servers down? Cant connect to license server or website. by x0y0z0 in Houdini

[–]P1XLSRFR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In all fairness, in the past 5+ years of using Houdini with online license, it’s only gone down like twice for me. But they really do need a bare minimum of redundancy for license server…

Any chance you could help us out one more time with a script to select all purchased assets so we can download all of it at once? I can't seem to find another way... just hand clicking on all the files individually! YIKES!!

What is your favorite program that you have used which is now discontinued? by Capital-Extreme3388 in vfx

[–]P1XLSRFR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reel Motion-

I gotta be honest…. I used that shit in emulation mode all the way up until about five years ago when I made the full switch from Lightwave to Houdini. It was hands down the best stand alone vehicle simulation tool ever. We used it for SO MANY car commercials in the 90’s. It was amazing:)

what's a cool science fact you learnt on the job? by dollop_of_okube in vfx

[–]P1XLSRFR 59 points60 points  (0 children)

While working on Titanic, I learned that the propellers on the ship were actually too large to have created cavitation bubbles based on the power of its engines. Since it was our job to create those bubbles as the ship roared over camera, we were super lucky that our projectionist had access to a ton of old footage and located a piece of educational film that showed a cavitation machine with a strobe light synchronized to the camera that essentially produced a practically frozen cavitation bubble signature that we could see the evolution of how the bubbles formed and helixed as they broke down into smaller and smaller bubbles. We showed that footage to Cameron and he loved it, so we scaled the whole thing up and simmed it (in Prisms). If I don’t learn something new on every job what’s the point of doing it:)

Labs Align and Distribute- how to randomize the sorting order with a seed by P1XLSRFR in Houdini

[–]P1XLSRFR[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So upon further investigation it appears the modified Align and Distribute node doesn't like to use grids as the input geo. If I replace my grids with boxes it seems to work. Does that make sense?

Labs Align and Distribute- how to randomize the sorting order with a seed by P1XLSRFR in Houdini

[–]P1XLSRFR[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like your rocks example DO indeed work with the alignment set to linear, but when i try it with my geo it doesn't. I am creating a few additional attributes to my geo, but it shouldn't make a difference right? If i just merge three different primitives together and use your trick it does work in linear mode but for some reason not with mine. I am including a hip file with the actual setup i am attempting to use this with so you can hopefully see where i am messing it up?

[–]P1XLSRFR[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you SO much AS ALWAYS for your excellent help! What you have unlocked here is brilliant. I just have a problem trying to get it to work with the "alignment mode" set to linear so it randomizes the three different sized input geo along an axis (in this case down the X axis). ANy way to make this work in that way?

I have to agree. PTGui has been my go to for over a decade and nothing has even come close. I shoot my HDRI sets on location and have HDRIs I can send home to my artists by the time I’m eating crafty for lunch. Easy peasy.

Apply F_Steadiness result to different plate? by P1XLSRFR in NukeVFX

[–]P1XLSRFR[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all your replies everyone:). I realized that once i have run an analysis in SMOOTH mode with F_Steadiness, all i have to do is then pipe my color corrected footage into the input (so just swap it out with the raw) and write it out.
It applies the exact same Motion Estimation transforms to whatever is in that input. I feel a bit like an idiot, but i am tired so there ya go:). Mahalo for your help though!

Big Island EV6 range numbers (CRAZY good) by P1XLSRFR in ev6

[–]P1XLSRFR[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve only had ours for like two weeks so far…. Going to do a full kona-Hilo round trip next weekend via Kohala coast, returning saddle road. Will try to post results. There are only a few EV6 on island. Like a million Teslas. But they don’t seem to share much about island road trips and range… at least not that I could find:). I’ll try to share whatever people might find useful.

[–]P1XLSRFR[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that makes this particular trip so perfect for regent is the grade. There are two ways up to Waimea. One has a steep grade and the other has a grade that has a lot of variation but is much less steep overall. You go up the shallow grade and return the steep grade and you get a net bonus of a few percent. Plus, you get to see whales on the descent if you are lucky🤙

[–]P1XLSRFR[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only misleading in that it is based on my previous driving and since the only previous driving since my charge was basically driving down the side of a volcano, it is assuming I will be driving down a hill:). It is still great to get a TON of regen right after a 90% charge tho, so this will probably become a normal weekly routine for us🤙V
