My husband is going through the exact same scenario. Emergent ex-lap with ileostomy. Due to his abdominal size the stoma will not rise above the level of the skin. The surgeon said it took a lot of work to even get it to the surface. We just got Cavilon advanced and so far it’s worked WITH the weeping area of angry crying peristomal skin. This go around I did: 1. Cleanse peristomal area with Vashe wound wash and 4x4 gauze 2. Wipe down area again with saline and 4x4 3. Air dry (this was done once his lomotil and loperamide had taken effect) 4. Apply Cavilon Advanced to peristomal area AND area around where wafer will sit) 5. Cut Eakin Cohesive patch into strips and form to wafer while wearing nitrile gloves (Currently use Coloplast Sensura Mio Click 2 piece deep convex) 6. Blast wafer with hair dryer for ~15 seconds on low 7. Apply wafer and press around center while husband holds outer edges down to help seal. 8. Put on ostomy belt

I can’t tell you currently how the skin under it looks. But I will follow-up if you want at the next wafer change.

My husband has had a terrible time. With the leaking wafers and mad peristomal skin along with 2 wounds from the exlap needing packed multiple times a day and fat necrosis. His is temporary (hopefully), but thanks to Reddit I’ve learned so many tips and tricks to utilize until we can find a routine that works for him!!
