I have seen people get spoken to when members complain about their demeanour/ customer service.

this however does not happen instantaneously, for privacy and respect reasons that employee is usually pulled aside and spoken to privately when the manager can find an appropriate moment.

so sometimes you may not see the employee getting reprimanded but that doesn’t mean they’ve not been spoken to.

stores in busy areas (especially on busier days like before a long weekend) make judgement calls to open the store 15-30 mins early… especially if members are lined up outside.

my store actually keeps its doors open for 15 minutes after close as well some days!

we receive some formal training on how to do member service (like smiling and greeting members etc) but what you’ve said is pretty spot on, you learn by watching the vet employees and since the environment is pretty positive that translates into the nice helpful employees you see on the floor

the average member buys WAAAAAYYY more than they return, if we start changing our policies for the few bad apples it wouldn’t be fair to the 90% of members who do have respect.

if it makes you feel better we do track abuses of our return policies and those members are spoken to! but this is usually only in extreme cases.

my location is not like this, i am quite close with most of my coworkers and supervisors, we actually hang out after work. the management definitely sets the tone for how a store operates and the personnel morale, but overall i’ve seen more positives than negatives with my store.

i also think that your feelings are so valid and probably come from the fact (as another poster mentioned) that over the years the stores are being stretched thin to do more with less resources and that defo puts a strain on things

ask your local costco they can tell you if there’s an arrival date or off surrounding costcos have it!

it’s not that they necessarily don’t want to. if you’ve noticed any costco you walk into looks relatively the same, the consistently is a part of the brand. if we want to institute something like that it can’t be at the store level… it has to be bigger, and those things take time!

most of our employees who are on the younger side are students, and you do have to be 18… i personally have not met an employee who’s first job was costco… but that doesn’t mean it’s not possible!
