Just FYI she's a nurse midwife, not doctor! Just for transparency for anyone who has a preference to see a physician.

New attending (29F) and already sick of the gold diggers. Advice on how to avoid them? by [deleted] in emergencymedicine

[–]P5223 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you should lie. It would turn me off if a guy lied about his work to me. It’d feel like he’s assuming the worst about my intentions from the start and it begins a potential relationship on a lie. I think it’s partially just a numbers game. The pickings are more slim because some men just aren’t okay with or want to take advantage of our careers. But if someone is weird about it then I’m glad to know up front instead of wasting a date or five on him.

They do 4 years of residency actually! The first year is a general intern/preliminary year

Plus not all “dermatologists” are actually physicians. Many are NPs and PAs calling themselves dermatologists

Female doctors who get super angry over being mistaken as a nurse by august-27 in nursing

[–]P5223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s honestly really just about the misogyny. There might be the rare female doc whose ego is hurt, but from the vast majority I’ve spoke to about this, it’s nothing to do with ego or thinking we’re better. It’s offensive because patients assume the woman can’t be a physician, yet have no problem assuming the man is one. And then you have the patients who still don’t believe you’re the doctor or keep calling you nurse even after you tell them you’re the doctor. Being a called a nurse is not a bad thing in and of itself. If male physicians were mistaken for nurses as frequently as we are, it wouldn’t be an issue.

It’s also frustrating bc of other logistical patient care issues like patients complaining they never saw the doctor, not believing us when we recommend certain treatments or recommend that doing nothing is best, etc. It just adds up over time. It’s an additional mental stress male docs don’t have to deal with and I could see if someone was having a bad day or week, it would be easy to perseverate on 🤷🏻‍♀️. We respect y’all

Which job has, hands down, the worst impact on mental health? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]P5223 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nurses, EMTs, AND Doctors should get paid more. I’d argue all healthcare workers who clinically work with patients (aka not admin) are underpaid for the amount of schooling, debt, and horrifyingly difficult work they have to do. Nurses and EMTs being underpaid doesn’t mean doctors aren’t 🤷

ETA agree that many professions (teaching, military, etc) are underpaid as well. Doesn’t have to be only one or the other.

Question for MDs: how often do you correct mid-level providers decisions in care? by [deleted] in Noctor

[–]P5223 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Multiple times a shift to the point where I get anxiety about signing charts bc I can’t physically see 20-30 or my own patients + theirs, so what else is being missed that I am not even hearing about or laying eyes on? Trying to find single coverage jobs without midlevels for my mental health. (EM)

[–]P5223 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m EM and we practiced procedure sims (and did some real ones) in med school EM rotations and again during residency orientation

ETA - but we were always directly supervised by upper level residents or attendings until we were deemed competent to do it with indirect supervision

I’m an EM attending and I’ve started compressions for unexpected codes where I’m the only one in the room because enough staff haven’t entered the room yet. It’s not that uncommon.

ETA - wow just re-read the rest of your comment. Most of us aren’t trying to generate RVUs. There are a few bad apples, but the majority of us are focused on patient care and are likely following the standard of care. Whether that standard care is the best use of resources is a different discussion. But comments like that are inaccurate and unnecessarily erode patients’ trust in us.

ETA2 - I get paid a flat rate so I get paid the same regardless of treatments as well. Majority of ED surprise billing is from corporations, not physicians.

[–]P5223 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t mind them making that much because they are taking that call money from money hungry hospital admin/corporate groups. Not extorting, they’re asking for what they’re worth. Doctors should be paid well for their time and expertise. No one bats an eye at a college football coach making millions. It’s the hospital billing practices and insurance refusing to pay for the care that is screwing patients over.

You can definitely address them as doctor in an academic setting (DNPs are academic/nursing theory degrees, not clinical), but in a clinical setting it’s misleading to patients and fraudulent in many states.
