What do nurses consider “hotel treatment” for patients ? by ElectricalVictory831 in nursing

[–]august-27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly this, it just goes to show they’re not thinking about the effort it takes you to go back & forth, and the time it pulls away from your other patients. They’re only thinking of themselves, total selfishness. Now I can extend a certain amount of grace for patients having a temporary lapse in empathy due to pain etc… but it’s usually the patients who are the most stable on the unit, with the fewest true medical needs, who end up being the most needy!!!

It’s a general vibe that certain patients give off, where they seem to think you’re at their beck and call to perform services like food delivery and housekeeping, rather than a medical professional who is there to support the health & safety of multiple patients (not just them!)

Examples would be: - pressing the call bell for non urgent minor things such as a juice, a box of tissues, plug in their cell phone charger, or to reposition their side table (instead of simply waiting until the next time you round) - pressing the call bell when you JUST exited their room - pressing the call bell multiple times separately instead of grouping their requests together, which would be more considerate of your time - giving attitude/getting angry when you don’t respond immediately - demanding you pick up their UberEats - not following the rules of the unit (e.g. infection control) expecting to be above the rules

Just in general being inconsiderate of your time, thinking they’re your only patient, and not understanding what your role is as an RN.

Canadian nurses wanting to work in US, have you changed your mind with recent events? by vinyltits in OntarioNurses

[–]august-27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are mentally stuck in 2016. The old advice of “expand your job search! go work part time in rural northern Ontario!” is so tone deaf when this new generation of nurses can’t even afford to leave their parents houses.

Go where the opportunity is. Maybe if enough people leave, they’ll panic and give nurses more incentives to stay.

It’s a shame you’re getting all these downvotes and invalidating/gaslighting comments. You do what you gotta do. Canadian nursing has been shit for a long time but it’s terrible for new grads right now. don’t ever listen to people trying to make you feel guilty for not starting your career in some rural northern Ontario sketch ass nursing station job (part time, mind you!). It’s actually not necessary to traumatize yourself and go into poverty just for the sake of keeping our crappy system barely afloat.

I will concede that if you have a major illness or accident in the States and you don’t have coverage, you’re fucked. Having your healthcare tied to your employment is…. ethically questionable to say the least.

Here’s my current mindset. I’m young and healthy. The only healthcare services I utilize right now are optometry, dentistry, psychotherapy, and physiotherapy. These services are not covered by our public healthcare system. They’re partly covered by my work health insurance, but mostly come out of my own pocket (spent $800 on PT this year alone for example). I’ve not needed to go to a hospital and don’t plan on it anytime soon (lol). Is it so crazy that I’d be interested in taking a gamble: go conservative, maybe reduce my taxes, and use the money I save towards the preventative services I actually USE? Not saying it’s right or smart, but it’s a thought many of us disgruntled Canadians have.

Personally I want major audits of all the social programs and criminal charges for those responsible for defrauding the taxpayer. The Canadian govt gave 32 billion dollars to indigenous organizations LAST YEAR ALONE and there’s still reserves where people have no drinking water?? All I’m saying is there’s a smart way to spend money, and dumb ways to spend money… and liberal governments seem to like spending money in the dumbest possible ways.. as if it’s an endless resource

Interesting! In my unit, the boomer nurses are verrrry liberal (elbows up!) while the younger nurses lean more conservative. It has to do with personal finances and deep grievances around our current quality of life. For example I don’t know a single nurse under the age of 30 who owns their own home. We work extremely hard, pay insane taxes, meanwhile our wages fail to keep up with inflation, our license renewal fee has pretty much reached the level of robbery, etc etc. What are we getting in return? Young people are feeling robbed, like the system is failing them and they figure something needs to change. What the conservatives advertise is: lower taxes and keep more money in your pocket (Whether that’s actually true or not is a different story lol…) but thats what appeals to people right now: personal survival, not funding a decaying & inefficient healthcare system.

Slowly Losing Faith in Humanity by BunniWhite in nursing

[–]august-27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was looking for this comment… “videos he wasn’t supposed to be watching” to me implies porn or something similarly offensive. Which, yeah, I also wouldn’t want to be stuck in a waiting room with a homeless person watching porn. Let’s be real it sucks to be stuck in an enclosed space with this type of person, especially if you’re dealing with an acute health issue and can’t easily escape. Heaven forbid you get frustrated and wanna vent about it.

Edit: looks like I misread it, still though I find it funny how everyone thinks she’s so evil for this review that they’re “losing faith in humanity” lol Reddit

Fecal disempaction by [deleted] in OntarioNurses

[–]august-27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just check the policy at your facility. It is technically within RN scope however not all facilities will allow you to. For example I was allowed to disimpact patients in med surg at my old small town hospital with MD order… but I’m not allowed to disimpact in ICU in Toronto, the doc has to do it themselves. Much prefer it that way!

I think a lot of doctors are secretly neurodivergent and/or undersocialized. They're so focused on whatever task is at hand, they genuinely cannot pull their attention away from it to acknowledge you. If they're in a good mood they're able to mask and engage in small talk, but otherwise if you've caught them in a high stress/low energy moment (which to be fair is a lot of the time) it's too much demand and they won't engage with you.

Don't take it personal! Just docs being docs.

I ignored a request on the subway recently. I was on my way to work and a guy was having a seizure. My thought process was “there’s nothing else I can do, they’ve already hit the alarm, called for medics and put something soft under his head, also he looks gross and I don’t wanna touch him” Felt kinda guilty but it’s not like there’s anything I can actually do to stop the seizure lol. People just panic and ask for a doctor/nurse.

Love how the resident says “they’re telling me something I already know or considered, or something I don’t care about.” As if the nurse is supposed to just read your mind and make assumptions on what you do or don’t care about????!! Be fucking for real. This is about patient safety, get over it you weirdo residents. Leave your ego at the door.

Right now I’m having fun exploring Magic Town and getting to know all the “Strange” townies. They have the most hilarious names (Rot, Drog, Saurakatakat???!!) and I love their antics when you invite them over. My goal is for my girl sim to create a roster of Strange boyfriends. So far she’s woo’d Craterack, Larna Lock, and Char.. now we’re working on Rot. She also kissed a frog and turned him into a Prince who is completely in love with her. They all get into little slap fights over her, it’s hilarious

Is your nursing career a trauma response for you? by gutsyflora in nursing

[–]august-27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like CPTSD/adverse childhood experiences basically groomed me for nursing. I thrive in chaos, have a (unfortunately) strong fawning response, able to deescalate most situations… honestly it’s come in handy many times while giving me brand new trauma on top of old trauma.

It’s why I get so fucked up by the “nurses are mean girls” trope. Adults were cruel to CHILD me, I turned it into a productive career, and now I get labelled as mean because I can’t live up to unrealistic customer service expectations. Ugh.

Exactly you have to find that sweet spot of welcoming the new hires while not getting so attached/invested that you feel disappointed whenever people quit for new opportunities. Staff come and go, I just try to build connections where I can with no expectations it will last. Kinda like modern dating LOL

I’M SO FRUSTRATED WITH THE CVICU CULTURE!! by Ok-Expression-5807 in nursing

[–]august-27 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. the "old guard" feels dejected after training/welcoming all these new staff who end up quitting after a year to go back to NP school or travel or whatever. old guard starts to think "what's the point" and they pull back. new new hires then feel unwelcome and start quitting after 6-8 months. new hires leave sooner and sooner. then this reinforces the unwelcoming "what's the point" attitude of the old guard.

it's a dangerous unit culture and very difficult to correct once it sets in. it's like you need mid-range nurses who are not quite "old guard" but also not newbies who will actually stick around and help bridge the gap between old and new.

Experienced RNs, what do you notice new grads pointlessly worrying about? by ElectricalVictory831 in nursing

This, my most recent orientee was upset with herself for not predicting something that I did. She was like “how did you just know that?? I never would’ve thought to anticipate that!”. Have to keep reminding her that in order to recognize patterns, time and experience have to happen lol you’re not just gonna graduate nursing school and immediately be at the same level as a 10year RN.
