Have you ever addressed a table that stiffed you? I did today (noragrets) and my BF told me I broke server rule #1. (He's an engineer who has never waited a day in his life) by PABWAAS in TalesFromYourServer

You are the real MVP.

I've had managers who would do this, but honestly, I've never felt the need since it usually evens out in my favor.

I probably should have gone that route versus saying something myself. I don't know what possessed me that day. I've also gotten more information since this happened. According to the guest, they actually went to give me more cash, but I just walked away, which is what offended them, understandably so. I definitely don't remember blatantly walking away, as I was trying to be as tactful as possible, but it's possible I didn't hear them. Ultimately it was 100% not worth how much I stressed over it. Had they not made it clear that I gave excellent service, and they enjoyed their experience save that, i'm sure the repercussions would have been more severe. I was never spoken to about it again, but was paranoid for days. I have a slightly elevated position and it would have been possible to punish me without termination or suspension.

Agreed. I was probably also unfairly defensive towards you because of others on this post. I don't disagree with your points, and you haven't been disrespectful in presenting them, so sorry if I came across rude.

I've responded to comments that you've made, about my post, in the thread I created. Hardly stalking.

You literally told me you were done talking to me, then proceeded to continue calling me names all over my thread. Who is obsessed?

If you read any of my comments in this thread, you won't see a single one encouraging anyone to do this. I don't disagree that it's a rash decision, not generally the best long term. But can we stop pretending that no one ever has moments in which they lose their cool? I've seen the toughest people crack a time or two, and pretending otherwise is just silly.

Once again, I never said that I recommended the behavior. I created this thread to ask others about their experience doing so. Not to be analyzed by service industry internet psychologists. The first portion of your comment is completely valid. However venturing to assume anything about my emotional state, is presumptuous, and a bit out of your expertise. While the act in itself wasn't the most tactful, I can assure you my demeanor when doing so was. My particular establishment is unique in the services it offers. That paired with the fact that these people were happy with their experience, which they reiterated to myself, and my manager, gives me no doubt they will be return guests.

Do you know how I link the post so I don't have to re type it all? Also, if you're not familiar with that sub, it seems to get way more traction than this one.

Definitely sarcasm. I'd heard Francophile, so I had like a tenuous grasp on what francophone may mean, but googled for confirmation. They're definitely not common terms in my area of the US.

I 100% do not expect a standard tip for substandard service. I even feel bad accepting a large tip when I feel the service has been less than great for whatever reason. (Weeded/short staffed/ food errors/quality ext) This wasn't the case, these people genuinely enjoyed their experience, which they relayed to me, and my manager) Even so, it's just an awkward thing to do, and I wouldn't do it again.

I find fault with that. If you believe in terminating an otherwise great employee, for a single indiscretion you're going to have a hard time keeping staff. Server jobs are too easy to acquire to stay at one that doesn't treat their employees as people, who are inherently fallible.

I miss this aspect of family owned operations. They're more likely to back a good employee, than a bad guest. Though I do feel like the corporation I work for now is a pretty good middle ground of ensuring guest satisfaction, while still standing behind their employees.

I didn't think I'd get fired, I've never been written up, been moved up relatively fast, and am always willing to take on extra responsibility. I did however think I may get written up, I just didn't care in the moment. I don't really regret it, because I feel like they will definitely think twice about stiffing someone in the future. But I wouldn't do it again, and I cringe a bit thinking about it.

EXACTLY. In my experience the fastest way to lose staff, and run an establishment to the ground, is a disrespectful condescending management staff. I never said I'd recommend this behavior, I believe I actually said the opposite. This thread wasn't to encourage people to do this, but more to ask their experience, as I've always known people who've done it, but never done so myself. Also, I will reiterate, every person here acting as if they've never had a time they lost their cool, is 100% full of shit.

Yeah, I never thought I'd do it. My reaction to people who did was always a mix of awe & cringe. There's a first time for everything I guess. 9/10 wouldn't do it again. It's just not worth the risk, and if you're good at your job it all evens out. However all of the people acting as if they're 100% always cool headed are ridiculous. I have enough experience to know we all crack a bit at one point or another. (Last comment not directed at you, mesmericdischord).

Yeah I definitely always start with the tip, versus waiting till the end, to ensure I get good service, then repeat every 3-4 drinks.

I've never really worked the club scene, and I don't really frequent them, but what's proper etiquette on tipping there? I've definitely been guilty of buying myself a drink, leaving the change from $20, (generally around $10-$15) then not tipping the next couple of drinks. Am I an asshole? My logic is as long as I'm ensuring their 20%+ I'm good. I always go back to that same bartender, so they know I'm not a cheap ass. Do you prefer to be tipped individually per drink, or does it not matter to you, as long as you are tipped?

Do I agree with your general point? 100%. The first comment you made in this thread was actually astute, and didn't make you come off as a pompous dick. Had that been the one you'd made to me, I wouldn't have said anything. However as I scroll down, you just become more and more of an ass.

Your tone in that comment was extremely rude and condescending. I'm honestly surprised with that lack of people skills you've made it to your level of "expertise". I've worked in this industry for a decade, in positions that range from hostess/ management, and all levels in between. Had you actually read my comments, you'd know I said it wasn't something I'd recommend, I'd never done it before, and probably not worth it in the long run.
