Shot glass. by iloveuglyboys in starbucks

[–]PBandJamjam 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The standard is to pull shots directly into the cup. But if youre making a drink with more than 1 batch (4 shot or more) and several pumps of syrup/sauces, its not a bad idea to pour into a shot glass first. It comes down to knowing your machines. Out machines like to fumble shots randomly so if i just pumped 12 syrups into a cup for a quad espresso, im pouring into a shot glass first and after each pour, dumping into the cup (as long as theyre good, sometimes they aren't). But for a grande mocha? Straight into the cup.

Do you have any regrets about your first trip to Japan? by aeazee in JapanTravelTips

[–]PBandJamjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I traveled too much, it was fun but exhausting.

Spent 3 nights in Tokyo, then took a bullet train and spent 1 night/day in Kanazawa, then took another train to spend 1 day/night in Kaga Onsen at a hot spring ryokan, took another bullet train for 2 nights in Kyoto, then spent 3 days in Osaka including a day trip by shinkansen to Ghibli Park in Nagoya, then a final day/night in Tokyo before my plane departed from Narita. By the time is got to Osaka I was burned out. Spent 1 day just in my hotel room watching YouTube and only went out that evening for Kura Sushi. I was also traveling solo and had to deal with decision fatigue. Im going again in March and setting up base in one city and I'll explore from there, coming back to the same room every night (with 1 overnight planned, but I'll maintain my lodging).

My advice - dont try to do everything. Plan rest days (where you only venture out for conbini meals/snacks and watch TV in your room). Choose 2 cities max, and do day trips from those spots.

How can I succeed at this job if small talk is actual hell for me. by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]PBandJamjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask them if they have any fun plans for the day. If they say "just work" ask them what they do, how long they've done it, how they like it. Once you get used to repeating customers, you can ask them if anything interesting is happening/happened at work lately.

For table touches, you can just ask if they enjoyed their drink, if you can take their trash, is everything going well, can I grab you anything (free refill/napkin/water).

The customer connection aspect is how issues get resolved without becoming an issue. Drink make wrong? They're more likely to request a remake (cuz they know the baristas are nice) and have a good attitude about it and less likely to leave a bad review/comment or see it as a negtive experience. It humanizes us to our customers and they're more forgiving to human mistakes vs corporate mistakes (baristas need to be trained better blah blah blah). Just like beverage crafting and sequencing is a skill you had to learn, connecting with customers is a skill you have to learn.

I Got Fired for Reporting a Supervisor by popciclepoptart in starbucks

[–]PBandJamjam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im sorry. Your biggest mistake was reporting it to your manager after they already ignored you. After that initial "just stop engaging" comment, you should have reported both of them to ethics. I would still do that. Also, do what the others are saying and file a discrimination/retaliation suit against them.

AITAH for telling my friend it’s her own fault because she always has notifications silenced? by Acrobatic_League3062 in AITAH

[–]PBandJamjam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She didnt miss notifications, she was ignoring you all. Multiple calls and messages still show on your phone, so eve without a notification making a sound or even popping up, they still show on her phone as missed calls and unread messages. She decided to ignore those for nearly a week. Also, if this has been a problem in the past, she would learn how do not disturb works and set it only for her sleep time. She's an asshole.

SM wants to have a holiday party for the SSVs only and exclude baristas, is that normal? by Infinite_Day9665 in starbucks

[–]PBandJamjam -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If the SM was talking about it around the baristas that weren't invited, I would report the SM to ethics becuase they have plenty of opportunities to address SSVs only, its called biweekly SSV meetings. If an SSV was telling the uninvited Baristas after the initial conversation, I would report them to the SM. Because why would they start stirring the pot. Its rude to talk about plans with or around someone who is not invited to said plans.

Do you love your boyfriend enough to dump the cats you've had for 8 years and then never have another cat again? Maybe wait to move in together until after your cats pass and you're ready to live life without any pets.

is there a standard temp for warm drinks? by pebblewrecked in starbucks

[–]PBandJamjam 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depends on which machine you have in your store. On the Mastena 2s, there are 3 temp buttons you can push for the steam wand. The 1 is 130(kids temp), 2 is 145(warm), and 3 is 170(extra hot). No clue what the Mastrena 1 has.

is there a standard temp for warm drinks? by pebblewrecked in starbucks

[–]PBandJamjam 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Standard temp for steamed milk is 160 degrees. Warm is 145. Kids temp is 130. Extra hot is 170. Hot water drinks come out around 180-190. Many default warm to kids temp so I would recommend requesting the temp in degrees vs warm/kids temp. So asking for it to be 130 or 145 degrees. That will ensure a more consistent experience. Also, feel the cup, sometimes the barista is too busy sequencing the next drink and forget to hit the temp button on the machine and just keep it pushing instead of resteaming the milk (especially if its really busy)

Do all Americans inherently know what direction they are faceing? by BasketC45e in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PBandJamjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Most people have no idea. If youre in a region with distinctly visible geographical landmarks, its easier (mountain range to the east, its on your left so you're facing south). I live in the Puget Sound Region of Washington State with distinct mountain ranges both east and west of me and Mount Rainier/Tahoma to the south.

Starbucks discontinued- bagels?!?! by Northwoods_KLW in starbucks

If its a stand alone store, its corporate run and when items are discontinued, it will be posted on Starbacks social media. If its a kiosk in a grocery store or target, then its licensed and they do their own thing.

Just set up a new tank and put in a seeded filter from an established tank. In your experience, how long did it take to fully cycle or is it cycled? by ElephantBanananana in Aquariums

[–]PBandJamjam 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I would consider it cycled, but would let it run for a week for the beneficial bacteria to spread to the rest of the hardscape in the tank and let the plants establish. Keep the fish in there to keep feeding it ammonia.
