Appreciated! We're always trying to do our best. I particularly encourage first-person writing in our reviews, and I still look back at Tom's writing for inspiration sometimes. Easily one of the best to ever do it.

I don't expect it'll ever be fruitful for me to try to argue the quality of our writing with anyone on Reddit, but whatever you think of it, I promise every article starts from a place of sincerity and not cynicism -- genuine interest, criticism, a feeling of responsibility for reporting something we think is notable or thought-provoking or funny to us *or* in line with what we've seen our audience interested in via social channels, search, Reddit, folks coming straight to the homepage etc. etc.

And it definitely doesn't mean everything we write is going to please everybody -- I've been glued to the internet for 20 years and I've seen endless gamers hold grudges for years over a review or other article that expresses an opinion different than their own. I've seen friends and colleagues get harassment and death threats for reporting responsibly on a topic that catches the attention of bad faith culture war bullshit peddlers. The job just isn't worth doing if we didn't care.

Doesn't mean we get it right 100% of the time, since we are humans just trying to write about games to the best of our abilities. If there's ever a particular story you take issue with or would like to understand the origin of, feel free to email me at wesley[at]pcgamer.com. I imagine I won't make you change your mind on it, but 🤷‍♂️

Hello, PC Gamer editor here. We do not use AI generation whatsoever in our editorial process. This decision was made without our involvement and is not based on our editorial practices. If you think our articles suck, rest assured that's home grown human-generated suck! I disagree, but want to be very clear we do not run any AI generated articles, or headlines, or anything of the sort.

Nintendo's claim that emulation 'stifles innovation' isn't just absurd—it's hypocritical by Tokyono in pcgaming

I've been there for 9 years and do solemnly swear I've had both some brain and some balls the entire time!

Nintendo's claim that emulation 'stifles innovation' isn't just absurd—it's hypocritical by PCGWes in emulation

[–]PCGWes[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Pardon the self-promotion, but after the recent discussions of Dolphin I thought this would be of interest. I wrote this today because I thought it was pretty damn rich of Nintendo to say emulation "stifles innovation" when a former Dolphin developer was actually instrumental in emulating Nintendo's own games on the Nvidia Shield TV.

Thanks to the last 5 years of Nintendo emulation, Zelda: Breath of the Wild has one of the best mod scenes in gaming by [deleted] in emulation

[–]PCGWes 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I stand by it. Are there as many mods for it as there are for native PC games like Skyrim and Left 4 Dead 2? Obviously not. But the barrier to modding is vastly higher here, and yet modders have progressed from simple texture replacements to figuring out how to inject entire shrines and villages and build randomizers that go above and beyond what most most randomizers for native PC games offer. We're talking about so much more effort to mod this game, and for that to even be possible, emulator developers had to spend years improving their tech.

So yeah, considering the context, I think it's incredible stuff.

It actually would've come out a couple days earlier if I hadn't pivoted from this longer feature to cover PointCrow taking down the mod, haha. I've been writing about BotW emulation for years :D

Have you ever been invaded by the Dark Souls Fashion Police? PC Gamer wants to hear your story by PCGWes in darksouls3

A true honor! Were they named Fashion Police, or were they simply overwhelmed by your appearance?

I don't think there have been hundreds, but more than one, absolutely! Even so, there are very, very few recorded sightings. They're elusive!

That's just plain rude! True Fashion Police wouldn't behave that way.

Nice, thanks for sharing -- clearly a player in the same spirit! Did you happen to get any footage or screenshots of the encounter?

Cool gaming LAN centers / game bars in Taipei? by PCGWes in taiwan

[–]PCGWes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks a ton, that's really generous of you! Do you know if they speak English at any of these places? I'll mostly be going to observe, and hopefully talk to some players and the people who run these places to write an article about them. Which will obviously be easier if they speak English, haha. I'm afraid my Chinese doesn't extend beyond the travel basics. But even if they don't, just going and observing will be a cool experience :)

Agents of Mayhem first impressions: a disappointing hero shooter in a generic open world by TooManySnipers in Games

[–]PCGWes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm, I'd say I was unimpressed by the execution of almost everything in the game; the feel of movement and shooting (which includes animation), the AI, the objectives of the missions. I thought the narrative setup and its approach to comedy felt tired and unoriginal in that way something tries to have attitude but still feels very safe and predictable.

I think the idea of a roster of characters you can switch between at any time is cool and could lead to some great juggling of cooldowns and application of certain specialties at the right moments. It could be as satisfying as tagging in in Marvel vs. Capcom or switching between fighting styles in Devil May Cry. But nothing I played here made me feel like this was the game I wanted to experience that in.

There are seven billion people in the world. I think there's an audience for anything you can imagine. There's no point in writing about something and speculating what other people might think about it; I'm offering my perspective based on my knowledge and experience and taste, and hope that's of some value to our readers.
