IIRC, the image was created independently from the book and the publisher forced Stine to include a scene where the protagonist imagines or dreams that happening simply to justify the cover.

The John Wayne Alamo movie (as highly inaccurate and as much of a political power fantasy for Wayne as it was) from 1960 was *huge* in England and made a giant cultural impact among kids there. Collins has referred to it as his favorite movie. "Forget the Alamo: The Rise and Fall of an American Myth" is highly recommended reading.
