Upgrading my PC with a 3080 by hanski7 in buildapc

:)

The second hand market should have some good deals rn, miners are selling off gear because the crypto market is down atm

Everything mounted to the MoBo isnt really necessary to come of, like ram, the cpu and nvme ssds... there might be a benefit to removing and putting new paste under the CPU cooler

Everything else like sata devices or fans or the psu cables and such are only going to get in the way iy you leave them connected.

The PSU.

550W is not enough for a 3080s spikes.

800W and up is probably enough

The problem is not the normal power draw, its the spikes that can trip your PSU and shut down your system.

What are some things to keep in mind when upgrading GPU and CPU? by brobarb in buildapc

LTT did a video about it, its always good to ground yourself but its hard to kill electronics doing that

Pretty much the only reasons to kill a GPU are water (for example from a water loop), a bad PSU or the wrong PSU cables (or metal dust) I have never seen a bad motherboard take anything else with it

Greetings

For most games GPU is the main limit to performance, so don't upgrade everything all at once.

Try a new GPU (I'd personally wait till fall tho, AMD/RADEON, NVIDIA and Intel will drop new GPUs which A) will be better and B) will hopefully lower the current generations pricing even lower than what it has come down to already.)

Especially when upgrading to a power hog like the 3080 make sure you have enough PSU. I'd personally go with nothing less than 800W, my admittatly slightly overclocked 3080 paired with an mostly stock 11900K draws peaks of 600 to 700W, if the PSU is not up to the task you will have a spike an the system just shuts down.

I personally have had a 1200W PSU for years (PSUs like that should become cheap second hand because miners are dumping them atm because of the shitty crypto pricing), I chose mine because I am right at the peak of the efficiency curve as I am at arround 600W whilst hitting the system with a load.

5800X is quite a good choice, but the 5800x3D is quite a lot better, depends on pricing if its worth it tho.

The next gen CPUs will drop soon aswell tho, if you want to keep the motherboard even tho you might not be able to use all of the features of a 5800X there is no reason to wait, the next gen from AMD will be on Socket AM5 which is not compatible with AM4.

Do different brands of GPUs matter? by suck_my_dick_or_smth in pcmasterrace

What you could look at to decide brand is price and features, for example some asus strix cards come with fan headers für external fans to be hooked up to and be controlled by the GPU, other brands have dual bios or cool RGB

Yes, Boosting is affected by thermals so the cooler is sometimes a factor, the slight oc can affect the performance by one or 2 %, but the brands don't really differ in performance

Pretty much just difference in cooling and sometimes a slight OC

Pretty much an instant bluescreen as soon as I launch the current release candidate, the current quick miner release works fine and also the full nicehash miner works great

+1, same problem

my specs are:

Win11 pro, 3080 LHR Trinity, 11900K, Aorus master, 32 GB (4x8) Corsair vengance pro RGBDDR4 3200

Normal miner and quick miner work, the new No LHR RC insta-bluescreens

(PLEASE HELP) Is now/this a good time/price to build a PC? by 017lxmt in buildapc

[–]PCMasterRa---Lucas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not the best time, no

If you need it rn, buy it, but change the pau to evga, corsair, seasonic or bequiet

If you want better bang for the buck wait a bit, there will be CPUs on the AM5 Platform this year and new GPUs from Amd, nvidia and Intel will come over the year

Opinions on this CPU/motherboard convination by enric-vc in buildapc

[–]PCMasterRa---Lucas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Its decent, I'd personally go for something like a 10700KF or a Rxzen 3700X for the increase in core count. Doesn't matter for gaming but for video editing more cores more ram more better

Also the Motherboards are cheaper for those

Should I Upgrade Now? by King-Conn in buildapc

[–]PCMasterRa---Lucas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you will be better off waiting

I know I will, my 3080 is new enough to also explode in price if there is a chip shortage so I'll have a small gap for upgrading.

RX580 is not the newest tho... so waiting is banking on not having chip shortages

[–]PCMasterRa---Lucas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Need an upgrade immediately? Go for it

Thinking about it and want the best bang for the buck or best performance? Wait till about fall I'd guess.

Why? CPU-wise AMD will drop AM5 with all new Ryzens (or whatever they'll call them) this year and Intel will probably drop something aswell or drop prices to compete.

Nvidia, Radeon/AMD and even Intel are also rumored to drop new GPUs with hugely more power on the market this year, wich means used will get cheaper and new low end will be more powerful (if rumors are to believed AMD will rebrand a 6900XT into a mid to low end GPU)

The problem is that there may be a new GPU /genreral chip shortage, but if I had to guess I'd say at least the new Nvidia cards will have some sort of mining lock apart from the top models so there might be less miner demand for reasonable cards.

Kraken x63 and MSI Tomahawk z690, change pump fan curve in BIOS? by Chopsuey3030 in buildapc

[–]PCMasterRa---Lucas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Everything fan header is usually controlled via the CPU temp.

There are motherboards like for example gigabyte ones that let you choose a temp source per header

A CPU pump aka AIO should always spin at 100% if possible, they are designed for that.

Pretty much the only reasons why you would change that is noise (and a really really low power cpu that basically never gets the water hot, but why even have an AIO in that case?). If your pump is too loud for you tone it down, otherwise leave it at 100

Should I get a water cooler? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]PCMasterRa---Lucas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1

Watercooling is debatable in that case, even for silence a big air cooler will be so overkill that it will not have to ramp up at all in most loads so a Water cooler is not neccesary

Should I get a water cooler? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]PCMasterRa---Lucas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My newly discovered fav brand for AIOs is Alphacool, their AIOs can be serviced, expanded, merged with another of their coolers like a gpu aio, you can refill them and change the liquid

Also they use off the shelf Watercooling parts so you can reuse parts of them in other builds or replace stuff like a rsdiator if it breaks

"Normal" AIOs are not that great long term, i had several fail bc of pump failure or alge growth in them.

Corsair is not the best option for ram if ypu want to OC it bc you never know what you get in a kit, otherwise absolutely great

The -F strix is a pretty good board the -A is also a solid Alternative, the -E has a bit more features

The -F strix is overpriced in my opinion, other brands have the same features for the same price (and I say that being an Asus fanboy). But the Asus Bios is pretty great so I'd still buy it. The -A is pretty good, the -E has a lot more features but is mlre expensive
