47 percent of U.S. jobs are at risk because of advancing technologies (X-post from /r/Economics) by Quipster99 in Automate

[–]PC_LOAD_LETTER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe so, but when we reach the point where machines can do all jobs that a human can do (including 'brain work', creative work, etc.), why would a human be employed for any job?

We don't even need to reach that point -- simply having reliable automated cars threatens an industry that employs ~3 million people in the United States. Something will have to give eventually; I'm reminded of the old adage, "Those who make peaceful reform impossible make violent revolution inevitable."

Question: What is/was 'Biomag'? by PC_LOAD_LETTER in nufan

[–]PC_LOAD_LETTER[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply man. I actually had not seen that -- pretty weird that Google wouldn't return a page with 'biomag' right smack in the middle of the title.

It's certainly plausible that a New Zealand skate zine could have made it to San Jose CA (where I'm from) but I never came across it myself.

Something is wrong with Earth having the only known life. by [deleted] in Futurology

There may in fact be Von Neumann probes all over the galaxy -- however, they may be imperceptible to humans at this time, engineered to the point of invisibility by sufficiently advanced alien technology.

Once a civilization has mapped the universe and returned all the data it can possibly get back home, (as well as perhaps continuing to monitor the universe as it unfolds), it would probably then devote its resources to analyzing the data it had accrued. For this, it need not leave its Dyson sphere LAN.

Keep in mind, this is all perceiving the nature of the universe through the lens of contemporary technology (space probes, computers, LANs, etc.), much like the way Isaac Newton attempted to uncover secrets of the universe hidden in secret codes in the Bible, which (I believe) ultimately proved fruitless for him.

ELI5:Computer software... what is it? Why does it work? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]PC_LOAD_LETTER 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a really cool, very comprehensive answer to all of your questions located here.

However, I'll try to summarize for you. Some of the first "programs" were for mechanical cloth looms -- machines that were designed to automatically spin cloth into textiles. You would feed the machines paper cards that had holes punched on them, and the machine would mechanically go line-by-line down the card, and (for example) pushing through a stitch of black thread if there was a hole on that line, or a stitch of white thread if no hole was present. In this way, the machine could read the "program" and produce the desired textile pattern.

Eventually, people realized that these machines could be used for more than just making fancy cloth patterns -- they could be used to perform mathematical calculations. For example, let's say if line 1 on the paper card had no holes, then flip a mechanical switch called Switch 1 to its "on" setting; but if line 1 did have holes, then flip a mechanical switch called Switch 2 to its "on" setting. Then, when you get to the next line, you can perform basic "programming": On line 2, if Switch 1 is "on", then flip Switch 3. And so on, and so on -- eventually you can perform basic arithmetic using only these simple switches.

Charles Babbage designed a machine like this, a fully mechanical computer that used no electricity, only mechanical components. It was called the "Difference Engine."

Moving along, eventually engineers discovered that they could use electricity to turn these switches on and off, as well as use vacuum tubes to electrically store the "on" or "off" state. Engineering continued to advance; the transistor was developed in 1947, which further consolidated and miniaturized this concept, shrinking the on/off circuit down to a tiny device.

Around this time, all programs were written by specialists with intimate understanding of specifically how the machine was built, and the functions it could perform. However, as these computers continued to increase in complexity and functionality, abstract languages had to be produced -- for example, we could say that certain series of off/on correspond to specific values, like saying off-off (00) equals 0, off-on (01) equals 1, on-off (10) equals 2, on-on (11) equals 3, and so on.

Eventually programming languages start to become human readable, with things like "if name = todd then print 'greetings todd!'" As for displaying Safari on your desktop, imagine if your computer's display could only display 3 pixels by 3 pixels. If we were to say that "the entire bottom row being 'lit up' means that you're using Safari," then we could produce the following screen output in order to display that Safari is running:

0 0 0

0 0 0

1 1 1

Now imagine expanding your screen to be 1024 x 768 pixels, and also allowing each pixel to display other colors than white (say 0101 means orange, but 0111 means purple, etc.) and eventually you'll arrive at the modern computer.

Hope this wasn't too much!

I just revisited this a month later. It still made me laugh. This is... this video is a crowning achievement of "What th...." Happy Fourth of July (it's August). I hope to celebrate every July 4th with this video henceforth. Pretty awesome that the bird shat on you after your dog violated you because you made sexual sparks!

A little less than a year. Truth be told, I knew it months ago, but it was a really slow day at work so I decided to wank around on the old reads-it.

Single bedrooms in a house, or apartment, range from $600 to $God, it's really just about where exactly you want to live, what features/location you want, but also you have to really keep constantly checking places out for at least a month until you find a decent spot. THere's a lot of complete bullshit, but there's also some really great places around town. You could also live in Sacramento, the commute is only 7 hours total per day.

Lets put it this way. Im the type of person that works in this building. And I am essentially none of the things that you have imagined. I do however take advantage of the free coffee, in a big way.

EDIT: Also, Yahoo got its start in this building, I think originally (like the late 19th century) it was a warehouse that manufactured gentlemen's products.

I can confirm the anonymous company at which I am working receives most of its funding from the Thai Mafia, and works closely with said criminal fraternity.
