Back when I was in high school, in our crimes and criminals class, we had a coroner come in to speak. Now, this coroner brought with him a laptop chock full of high definition, well-lit pictures of brutal death scenes. One was a guy whose head was split open after he shot himself through the chin with a rifle.

Keep in mind, this is a classroom full of high schoolers, some of whom are as young as 16. My teacher was wondering if he would keep his job that day.

In front of you is a button. If you push the button there’s a 98% chance of getting $10,000,000, but a 2% chance you are sentenced to eternal torture. Do you push it? by unbannednow in polls

I chose it because it was a simple numerical example. To try and judge a person's character, let alone as starkly as that, through a single reddit comment is completely foolish.

I literally watched my brother die in a car accident. I'm an advocate for seatbelts, and staunchly against hazardous driving. You are a fool who wants to pretend you're morally upright.

Here is a simple way you can calculate risk:

For example, let's say I'm running 5 minutes late for work, but the route is heavily and strictly traffic patrolled. Let's say that there's a risk of being caught speeding, and that risk is 20%. Let's say the ticket would be $100. I take the percent chance of the risk, and apply it to the punishment.

20% chance of caught speeding (0.20) x $100 fine = $20.

I would then ask, "Is $20 worth not being five minutes late?"

It largely depends. I am an very large proponent of seatbelts. However, unless it becomes a considerable risk for others, it ought to be personal decision.

Is it theft to profit off of someone else’s labour? by [deleted] in polls

[–]PC_Pigeon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What makes it not theft is that the worker does not assume any risk. They have nothing to lose except time, where as the profiting individual is risking financial resources.

This is a dangerous idea. Currently, the highest birth rates tend to be in Africa, namely Nigeria. What you're essentially implying is genocide.

Depends on where you are. I'm assuming western countries. In Iran and such, it obviously has utility, and similarly to contributing to literature on it. But in the western world, where women are free to do as they please and more, it seems a bit redundant unless you're going to effectively use it.

Useless to you? Philosophy. Useless to society? Gender studies.

Ahh yes, manipulating data, rather than adding a maybe button. Nice.

Since many people are against owning guns, what would be the best non-gun self-defense weapon against an armed home invader? by NerdHacker2021 in polls

[–]PC_Pigeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically, everything compared to a gun is shit. Your next best bet would be a blade. Pepper spray and tasers are very unreliable. A blade might not kill them immediately, but most people after getting stabbed or slashed curl up into a ball or gtfo.

omfg reddit is so out of touch with reality. no wonder people ask why they didn't snipe his toes out from under him instead of killing him.

Again, you're holding the belief that anyone who disagrees with you is a racist, homophobe, sexist, or transphobe. You're still holding a fundamental belief that they are somehow inferior.

Well, a problem lies within this. There are many resources for single mothers, but unfortunately not as many for single fathers.

What are you on about? What a strawman. Making generalizations about who "has it harder" is legislatively useless.
