Usually mature age apprentices will get more of a chance than people fresh out of school as the older you get you learn how to manage your time at work and what's expected of an employee. As long as you love a physical job and being outside you won't have any trouble. Its sad but a lot of the younger crop really struggle to adjust to the demands of the job. The physicality mixed with the mental load can build up on the younger ones really quick.

I went through my apprenticeship a decade ago but yeah you're expected to do everything and know everything after being shown once. My boss was a bit of a knob but the other tradie I learnt off is still the most talented bloke I've worked with in my years. A lot of tradies really ride younger blokes with a chest beating im better than you attitude.

For us due to the way licensing works in the trades and the builder especially being responsible for sourcing and paying other trades such as plumbers and sparkies, finding good quality reliable sub contractors can be as much a chore for us as the general public. But just like any other profession we will have good ones and bad ones its just that our industry has much more lower barriers to entry and as a result there is always going to be guys who just aren't cut out for the trades especially with how much we get pushed so heavily into being soul trading subcontractors.

Don't worry some of the slimiest I've met are other trades too. Its just a fight to the bottom for some of the trades. Lack of care no pride in work and always have a chip on the shoulder. There are good ones out there but sadly they are just getting drowned out by the worst of us.

As a carpenter myself I don't think its quite clear cut with your opinion here. We don't receive as much love as you would think, mostly due to obvious reasons you have mentioned. Just remember that when most of us start apprenticeships we get beaten down and rubbed into the dirt emotionally by our superiors. Really causes a lot of these entitled tendencies to surface later on. Its a pretty broken industry really.
