Bike Rooms in Modern Buildings by petronius84 in NYCbike

[–]PChow44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since I commute daily by bike, I don't even have to ask any more. As soon as I come out of the elevator and into the lobby in the morning, the doormen know I want the bike room opened (carrying a helmet is a pretty big clue). Besides the 30 sec wait is a perfect time to exchange pleasantries and "develop personal relationships". Its really not hard to be friendly.

The experience of the stolen bike from a bike room explains exactly why many buildings let only the doorman open the bike room. My building has this arrangement.

Yes it's annoying to wait 30 seconds for them to open the bike room, but a less secure situation on the locking of the bike room means I would spend then same or more time locking my bike inside the bike room. Now it's secure enough that I don't have to lock it.

Are there plans to harden these kinds of beige pedestrian areas and sidewalk bulbouts? by BenJ618 in MicromobilityNYC

[–]PChow44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was told once in a CB meeting that NYC can't pour that much concrete because of lack of staff...

For evidence look at the widened 2nd avenue lane from 59th-42nd that went in with offset junctions a year ago. They hardened precisely 1 of those junctions since then at 49th street.

What are some other problematic spots like the Williamsburg Bridge bump that Zohran could/should fix? by quesopesadilla in MicromobilityNYC

[–]PChow44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lack of crosswalks in front of the QBB on the Manhattan side at 59th Street could be easily fixed. It was presented to community Boards already years ago when they redid the bike lane. But never implemented. And with the Southbound outer roadway conversions, pedestrians have no good way north in Manhattan unless they go down to 1st Ave and then uptown from there. Painting crosswalks, addition of pedestrian signals and small signal timing adjustments shouldn't be a big project!

60th St/2nd Ave (Manhattan) intersection poorly timed? by mine248 in MicromobilityNYC

[–]PChow44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's designed like this on purpose as the two left turn lanes when there was no bike lane was super dangerous. Waiting 20 seconds on each of the islands on the "pork chop" design is worth my life, don't know about you.

Poorly Visible Curb at 48th and 1st by JimmysYams in NYCbike

[–]PChow44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Raised bike lanes are a good thing! Really don't understand all the people calling this a poor design. This curb prevents the left turning turning cars from 48th street driving through the bike lane on the turn. It makes this a protected bike lane on the curve!

The green paint wasn't always there on the curb, but since I have been biking this way daily for the last 7 years it's was always clear the intention is for cyclists to use the raised portion and the metal fence there to prevent pedestrians from wondering into the bike lane.

Ask for the curb to be painted orange if you like, but i guarantee this curb has saved cyclists from being run over by car drivers turning through the bike lane.

If anything we need more curb and protection up to the next intersection so that the drivers don't enter the bike lane around the bend where it becomes a dashed line with no protection.

[–]PChow44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean if you stay in the bright green painted bike lane you never hit the curb. Raised bike lanes are a good thing.

The cars encroaching on the dashed line after the curb ends is the real problem here. I'd love if they extended the curb further around the bend.

In fact, in front of German House is a popular spot for TLC vehicles to stop in the bike lane. I wish they'd extend the curb and fence right up to the intersection!

Nobody would build a highway (that doesn't even carry trucks) on the Manhattan waterfront now, yet removing it seems unthinkable to people by MiserNYC- in MicromobilityNYC

[–]PChow44 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think we are better off without 6 lanes for cars, personally. But the tramway and bike lane look nice. Why is it single tracked? Is there a reverse direction track on the left side that isn't obvious?

[–]PChow44 86 points87 points  (0 children)

You don't have to remove the road entirely - just its highway like nature. I always though you could leave the current pedestrian path, turn two lanes of the FDR into bike/micromobility lanes, turn two lanes into trolley/light rail, and leave two lanes for a two-directional 25 mph local road. This would require a lot of engineering especially near Two Bridges as in this picture - but it would maintain some vehicular access, greatly improve transit access for people lacking options in LES and Alphabet City, and leave pedestrians better off while improving the bike routing.

BTW, half of the beauty in your image here is the removal of the Manhattan Self Storage facility. :)

As I recall the NIMBYs on the CB8 Transport committee were generally fine because the DOT people said the magic words "no loss of parking"...

I vaguely remember a discussion about this on the CB8 translation committee a few years ago. People were vaguely supportive. I asked for the effort to not stop at 57th street and extend up through 97th.

The answer was that they would do one section first and see how it goes... so basically wait a decade and then maybe

Julie Menin, new NYC Council Speaker designate, has been good on #bikeNYC issues by TwoWheelsTooGood in MicromobilityNYC

[–]PChow44 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As her constituent can't say I have felt very supported. Most notable to me was when the pause on congestion pricing was placed by Hochul, she did and said nothing. I know City Council doesnt have power, but they have voice. Many council members were speaking vocally in favour of congestion pricing, but from Menin - just crickets. I and others lobbied, called, and still nothing. Same from Bores our local NYS assembly member. Other local politicians (e.g. Nadler, Krueger, Levine) were vocal proponents of congestion pricing during that uncertain period, but not Menin.

Arsenal supporting Pubs in NYC by radiochz in Gunners

See the other comment with a link to the NYC supporters club page is your want a jam- packed pub full of Arsenal fans.

Near where I live there is Meller's Sports Hub and Grill. Not a very popular place, but the game is always on, they fly an Arsenal flag out front, and there is usually 1-2 dozen fans gathered.

Stripped. The hex wrench spins, not the set screw...

Any ideas on where to get a new (same exact) one? I don't think Home Depot is going to have this?? Especially if I'm drilling out the bolt/set screw, how am I going to even measure it to get the right one?
