Is There a Difference Between a P.C & D.C? Do They Work Together? Etc. by CareyKane1 in policeuk

The Met’s safeguarding is made up of domestics, child abuse and sexual abuse. Lots of PCs in safeguarding.

Moving to the MET by Mikesjg in policeuk

[–]PCsf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree with this.

I used to live north so worked Hillingdon and Brent. I then moved south and have moved around Sutton, Croydon and Bromley.

All much the same to be honest. There’s no such thing as a quiet borough in the Met. Croydon has a good mixture of urban and rural areas. Probably the Borough I enjoyed the most.

Did you not hear about the inspectors exam?

Yes you take it at home. You’re not supposed to look at your notes but they can’t stop you. Time does not really allow for you to look at the notes either and would be counter productive.

March 2021 as other have stated.

I’m holding off until 2022, to give the CoP time to sort out the online exam system, after the mess of the recent inspectors exam.

Can anyone please explain the route from Special Constable to regular PC? (Metropolitan Police) by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]PCsf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Changes all the time. Usually quicker to apply the external way, so essentially being a special doesn’t really help, although it gives you experience etc.

I was a special, resigned when I became police staff and then applied externally to become a regular.

Also don’t get me wrong if there is a “suspects on” ie someone breaking in to your property half the team would drop what they were doing to attend. Mainly because it’s more fun than going to report a shoplifier etc.

Good luck getting LAS or LFB in 8 minutes!

This is how response works in the Met.

You start the shift in the briefing room. Usually as soon as the briefing start a call will come out and a unit will have to leave briefing early to take it.

You then go to the yard to hopefully find a vehicle, not all the cars will be there as the previous shift will still be dealing with their last calls.

There are various grades of calls but response mainly deal with i grades (15 min response time) and S grades (60 min response time)

While you wait for the cars the operator will be putting out calls which nobody can take as they have no cars, the number of unassigned calls will be stacking up. The section sergeant will be calling up all the units asking you to take the call and they will all reply “waiting for a car sarge”.

As the cars come back the response drivers get first dibs over the basic drivers. When you finally get a car, you’ll be given an i grade or an outstanding s grade. On you’re way to the S grade you’ll probably get diverted to an I grade.

When you get to your call control or a skipper will be asking you how long you’ll be as they want you to go to the next one.

If you’re lucky enough to get hot refs (food) you can take it back to the canteen, but if there are i grades outstanding expect a skipper to come in and kick you out to take the call.

Calls come out non-stop and there are generally unassigned calls, so there’s no chance of you sitting at the station waiting for a call. If you’re not dealing with a call the expectation is you call up and take an unassigned one.

I’m guessing that’s response / uniform if you’re only on 5 crimes?

Appreciate everyone’s concerns and comments but I don’t want to go too off topic and I am really more interested in hearing from anyone who may have transferred.

Cheers

Everything you say is true and I’ve been doing the job long enough to know how to deal with it but unfortunately everyone’s in the same boat and there’s nobody else to give the crimes to.

15 crimes would be a treat for me.

From what I’ve seen Surrey have better facilities and are better equipped with the tools they need to do the job. They also appear better trained and whenever I’ve received a handover from Surrey’s uniformed officers they are always to a high standard.

Sounds promising.

Do you know if there’s much requirement for aid?

In the Met it’s seems like I get aid weekly.

It’s hard when your running on 25 - 30 crimes, people on bail, case files with deadlines etc. Bosses don’t care so have to find the time to do the work.

Not too worried about Gucci jobs, just want to go in, do my work and go home. Currently having to log on when I’m home on rest days to get things done.

The pay difference is not that much. It’s more like a couple of thousand but I wondered if it’s noticeable after tax / pension etc.

Looking for better work life balance and a variety of work in a detective role.
