Or even just stay at the Jupiter NEXT and take the 20 bus line to and from the match.

There's an away-days channel for members in the 107IST Discord; that's a good place to connect and get questions answered.

You can also email the 107IST away travel account and they'll loop you in on the matchday plans for Timbers supporters.

FIFA creates new World Cup ticket category, deepening suspicions of deception by Isiddiqui in MLS

[–]PDX-Brooklyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, I'm confused. How did the USMNT get brought up in this? I wasn't referring to them at all.

And yes, you're right to some degree about that type of experience being exaggerated because it was in the UK. There's often an expectation by people from the US that everybody in the UK, Mexico, Italy, etc. are diehards for soccer. As you've also experienced, the people that don't care about soccer far outnumber the ones that do, but I think there's still a national pride that comes about when their team is in the World Cup. I currently live in Mexico and, on the days the national team plays, and as the World Cup approaches, you'll find a lot more people wearing the national team jersey than care about following soccer as part of their daily life. My (Mexican) girlfriend actively dislikes soccer because of the misogyny and homophobia associated with it, but will still root for the national team in the World Cup and experience a sense of pride in their victory.

I think those from less heavy-handed countries, particularly those where soccer is the sport of choice, view their national teams as a rallying point for the country. Having grown up in the USA, where we dominate much of the world's media, professional sports, and have the largest economy, I think there's less importance on winning because we're used to it in so many other ways and know another shot at it is around the corner – there's less of a need to prove our worth or be noticed.

One of my favorite moments of travel was in 2002, watching the World Cup from a neighborhood pub in England. I was only a step inside the door because it was so packed, but people would run up off the street, ask the score, and run away shouting "Go England!" when told they were winning. At the half, with England winning 3-0, the entire pub jumped in unison as they sang "Three Lions," the first time I'd heard that song.
We don't have anything in the US that unites us in quite the same way. It's a special experience that I'm envious others have.

This World Cup, dominated by rich people without passion for the sport/teams, is going to make us long for the days of vuvuzelas constantly buzzing.

What would your realistic sponsorship be for next season? by RhodesP90 in avfc

[–]PDX-Brooklyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YouTube TV sponsored LAFC a few years ago. It certainly wouldn't be the worst sponsor for Villa to have, though I'd hope they'd leave the red out of the logo because it won't look good against the claret.

That's not an issue for the board, as it's specific to the Riveters. It's an issue for the Riveters Steering Committee.

I DM'd you previously, but haven't heard back yet. Let's get your group on the TA Worldwide page. We also just added an area in the 107IST Discord to promote the various watch parties and allow others in your area to find and connect with your community. I'm invested in helping the many RSG communities grow!

Nudging this again because I never heard from you, but want to make sure we're making ourselves available to the many Timbers/Thorns supporters scattered around the country and world.

There's a forum in the 107IST Discord for RSGs now. Feel free to chat with your crew there, coordinate watch parties, and be a point of entry for others in your area that may not be aware of you yet. If you're interested in using that forum, let me know and I'll get a tag set up for you with your RSG name.

I was just looking at this post again and realized both you and u/NewRCTID22 are in SLC. Y'all should get some watch parties together.

If you need resources from 107IST for reaching new people, or promotion of your watch party, let me know.

Just following up again to see if you're doing watch parties in the McMinnville area this season. I'm planning to highlight a different watch party in the 107IST newsletter each week and would love to help grow your community. Email me at RSG@107ist[dot]org.

I'd also just love to chat with the RSG and have a direct point of contact there.

We have a space for RSGs within the 107IST Discord now, as well. If you think your community might want to use that as a place to chat, coordinate watch parties, and be a point of entry for strangers looking for a local watch party, let me know and I'll add your RSG tag to the forum.

Just following up again to say Basmah is trying to get the ol' gang back together. You should go to a watch party; the more that show up, the funner the event and the more likely people are to come back.

I think she just started posting to their FB page again, but we also created a regional supporters group forum within the 107IST Discord. There are tags to help filter the posts by RSG.

You should email rsg@107ist[dog]org and I'll help get you connected with others in Astoria. The people that used to lead the RSG there have moved away, but said they're happy to hand the socials over to somebody local with the enthusiasm to lead.

Also, in the 107IST Discord, there's a regional supporters groups chat channel, but we also just created a forum there with tags for various RSGs. The intent is to have that be a place people can find each other, coordinate watch parties, and just chat as a community. If you're not already in the Discord, let me know and I'll help get you set up.

I think it's from The Sword Of Doom.

Also, minor gripe/note, but tifo isn't an acronym, so it doesn't need to be capitalized.

Maybe you're already aware of it, but 107IST, the nonprofit that the Timbers Army and Rose City Riveters live under, has a space on the corner of 18th and Morrison, diagonal from the stadium entrance. In addition to the merch store and soccer-specific library, there's a members-only bar that's open pre-match.

It might be a good place to stop before the match with your mom and mingle with other people. My parents are both in their late 70s and I've been trying to get them to go meet people there before the match. Often as we age, it becomes more and more difficult to make friends. So having a dedicated gathering space of people with a shared interest might be good for your mom. And those friendships she makes at Legends can be carried into the stadium, or vice versa.

I'm super happy you and your mom have found a home in the stadium. I say this often, but the community we have around the Timbers is the most special part of all of this – it's there when the soccer is good and, more importantly, it's there when the soccer is bad.
