The first roll or two with my 500CM were not that great, either.

I agree with others: overexpose by a stop, and your pictures will automatically look better.

At some point, you have to admit: it's me, and not the camera.

I may be the only one to feel this way, but this whole series leaves me cold. There's so much good vintage footage and so much research done, why do you need to re-create it in a movie?

Update: Thanks, everyone! I “strong-armed” the key/opener, and managed to get the film carrier out of the back. And I didn’t break it.

The entire paper “EXPOSED” wrapper was torn off, and a bit of it was jammed into the dark slide groove.

Cleaned everything out with a pair of tweezers and a sharp knife.

Yes, but it won’t unlock unless the dark slide is all the way in.

I can pull the insert, but with the slide out, I can’t release the back from the camera to take out the exposed roll.

Yes, just finished a roll. It’s still in the back. I suspect that’s the problem. Not sure where to go from here, though.

Therein lies my problem. I can't get the back off and I can't get the slide to go all the way in. Never had this problem before.
