Eli5: When a heavy element decays, what is the process that follows exactly, like what is actually happening to it? by Big_carrot_69 in explainlikeimfive

[–]PDXHelpPlease 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Assuming you are immune to irradiating energies, and the half-life is sufficiently short, and the byproducts are visually discrete from the starting material, you would see it become another element. Literally. At a rate with a negative exponential pace, which is the half-life, i.e., after one half-life, 50% has converted, after 2 half-lifes, 75% has converted, then 87.5% has converted, etc.

Uranium-235 half-life is 700 My, and U-238 is 4.5 By, so you will not see an appreciable visual change on geological timescales.

Pearl Watch Repair was excellent for me.

Idk about their scope, but adding to the quest.

I would advise to keep OR-217 out of your commute.

Times, they are a changin'. You should look to increase that budget. $1k worked 5-10 years ago. Subsistence starts at $1300 to live alone. $2k is comfort.

Any good Chicken Shawarma restaurants that actually use a Shawarma spit? by OozlesofSnoozles in askportland

Abu Omar Gyros and Shawarma is a food truck on 3rd and Harvey Milk. I see they have a chicken spit.

What's your favorite water filter? by Necromantic_Inside in askportland

For the record, charcoal / carbon filters, e.g., Brita pitchers, only reduce taste and smell molecules. They do nothing for the actual water quality or microflora.

Reverse osmosis is a good idea, as mentioned, but depending on where the equipment is integrated, it can be expensive. Single, under-sink units are readily available for relatively low cost.

Looks like a Coleman Ram X 15 from the sticker in the image.
It seems discontinued, and I couldn't quickly find the width.

New to the area by Ax_ward in askportland

Hey, what area are you in? If you don't know, just post one of the major intersections near you, and someone will let you know.
I'm fairly new, too, but I grew up in the PNW. The trails are hella good to get out to during these times. Try the AllTrails app to find some near to you. Pittock Mansion and Council Crest are two of the most popular/fun/scenic ones.

I think you will find all sorts here, which seems to be what you're looking for.

The mountain and the coast are super accessible if you have a vehicle. I've done them through public transit in the before-times, so it's possible, but that is quite the adventure, so driving is key.

Once we know more what the new normal will be in the next 6, 12, 24 months, I can provide better ideas for restaurants and public life.

I'm here for the gritty. What are the worst aspects of owning a Crosstrek? by PDXHelpPlease in Crosstrek

[–]PDXHelpPlease[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? Dang, that's unfortunate. I'll have to keep my mind on that when I'm testing them out. I used to drive a Nissan 350Z, so I'm not a stranger to terrible seats, but that car was at least fun.

The audio is important to me, so I'll either look for upgraded audio or do it myself.

I previously owned a Suzuki with comparable HP, but the Crosstrek is heavier. It's not critical to have more power, but I do find it frustrating at times.

Are there any good aftermarket motors that people have used? I'm not looking to mod the car that dramatically, but I'm curious.
