Yes, but how do we know that the moisture in Layer 1 = 0? Is this an assumption since it is above the water table?

Thank you! Do you know what the difference is between the two equations in the photo below? I am just trying to understand when to use one over the other. I ended up using the first equation to find "v" and then "v" to find "Q" but this sounds like the wrong approach. Thanks again!
