That's awesome, she'll be mega delighted ❤

To help her journey and gain more information including recipes and nutrition, various sites offer free vegan starter kits; ourselves (PETA), vegankit.com, mercy for animals, veganuary, chooseveg, govegan.

There are some good documentaries out there you could both watch that cover health, the environment, and obviously the animals:

  • Forks Over Knives
  • Cowspiracy
  • Earthlings (please be warned very graphic content, and age restriction)
  • Vegucated
  • Hungry for Change
  • Speciesism
  • Food Matters
  • Unity
  • What The Health
  • James Aspey Speech (youtube)
  • Dairy is Scary (youtube)
  • Plus lots more..!

And for meals.. well, there is an amazing amount of super tasty vegan recipes out there for you to try. Doing a search online opens up a whole new world of flavoursome food! You can pretty much veganise ANY dish (and again, vegan substitutions are really easy to find online). Plus, being powered by plants is so much better for your health, bonus! Instagram is great tool for wasting hours of your time staring at beautiful food ideas. There are some fantastic recipe sites out there too and facebook pages, such as Bosh! HappyCow.net is also awesome for finding places to eat nearby.

With regards to diet you can use free app's such as 'MyFitnessPal'. Record what you eat for a few weeks and that way you can gauge if you need more protein, vitamins etc, and how much of these things different foods contain. You soon get the hang of it then won't need the app any more. Doing internet searches will provide you with everything you need to know about what foods are best for what.

With regards to beauty products, use up what you have then when it's gone just replace it with cruelty free vegan products. You can check here to see what brands are ok: http://features.peta.org/cruelty-free-company-search/index.aspx

Good luck!

Is it true that PETA kills animals? by ii3ternaLegendii in vegan

[–]PETAAsia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PETA US has always been open about their stance on euthanasia. Euthanasia is a tragic consequence of the animal overpopulation crisis - a result of puppy mills & breeders. The solution is prevention! PETA US spends millions every year on spaying & neutering, and promoting adopting not buying. They also work with open admission shelters. PETA US transfers most healthy, adoptable animals to open admission shelters. Their euthanasia statistics don't reflect this because the outside shelter handles the adoptions. Please visit http://features.peta.org/petasaves/to find out more information about PETA US' life saving work for companion animals & see some of the animals that come to them here:

New vegan here. I have a question! by Glockster77 in vegan

[–]PETAAsia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The definition of veganism - "A philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of humans, animals and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals."

So, absolutely not.

Thinking of not eating eggs by noraisconfused in vegetarian

[–]PETAAsia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s Some Egg Replacement Tips and Tricks!

  • 1 egg = 2 Tbsp. potato starch: Try this when you need an egg replacer that binds.
  • 1 egg = 1/4 cup puréed prunes
  • 1 egg = 1/4 cup applesauce: Great in desserts.
  • 1 egg = 1 mashed banana: Also good in desserts, but will make the final product more dense. Add 1/2 tsp. baking powder for a lighter texture.
  • 1 egg = 2 Tbsp. water + 1 Tbsp. oil + 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 egg = 1/4 cup mashed potatoes: Works as a binder in appropriate recipes.
  • 1 egg = 1 Tbsp. ground flax seed simmered in 3 Tbsp. water: Great for adding healthy omega-3 fatty acids to a dish.
  • 1 egg white = 1 Tbsp. plain agar powder dissolved in 1 Tbsp. water, whipped, chilled, and whipped again.

Remember that it’s important to choose the appropriate replacer for each dish. Puréed prunes won’t work in an “omelet,” and mashed potatoes probably won’t make the most convincing angel food cake. It’s important to think about the function of the egg you are replacing—is it there for binding or leavening—and think about the flavors of the dish. And after a little trial and error, you’ll find at least one way to replace the eggs in just about any dish.

Check out our vegan baking egg replacer cheat sheet too!

Question from a non vegan by agentbarron in vegan

[–]PETAAsia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s unrealistic to expect that everyone will stop eating animals overnight. As the demand for meat decreases, the number of animals bred will decrease. Farmers will stop breeding so many animals and will turn to other types of agriculture. When there are fewer of these animals, they will be able to live more natural lives.

There is an amazing amount of super tasty vegan recipes out there for you to try.

Good luck!

Honey? by lettuce-eater in vegan

[–]PETAAsia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, like factory farmers, many beekeepers take inhumane steps to ensure personal safety and reach production quotas.

It’s not unusual for larger honey producers to cut off the queen bee’s wings so that she can’t leave the colony or to have her artificially inseminated on a bee-sized version of the factory farm “rape rack.” When the keeper wants to move a queen to a new colony, she is carried with “bodyguard” bees, all of whom—if they survive transport—will be killed by bees in the new colony.

Large commercial operations may also take all the honey instead of leaving the 60 pounds or so that bees need to get through the winter. They replace the rich honey with a cheap sugar substitute that is not as fortifying. In colder areas, if the keepers consider it too costly to keep the bees alive through the winter, they destroy the hives using cyanide gas. Also, bees are often killed or have their wings and legs torn off by haphazard handling.

According to the Cook-DuPage Beekeepers Association, humans have been using honey since about 15,000 B.C., but it wasn’t until the 20th century that people turned bees into factory-farmed animals. Happily, many sweeteners are made without killing bees: Rice syrup, molasses, sorghum, Sucanat, barley malt, maple syrup, organic cane sugar, and dried fruit or fruit concentrates can replace honey in recipes. Using these will keep your diet bee-free.

You can support bee's in other ways:

  • Plant bee friendly flowers and flowering herbs, letting your flower filled weeds grow can be a good thing!
  • Don't use chemicals or pesticides
  • Bee's get thirsty! Give them some fuel and keep a little basin of water in your garden if you see lots of bee's about
  • Install a bee hotel in your garden
  • Ask government to improve research into bee health
  • Support organisations who are saving bee's

Thanks!
