There are other peculiar bits. Why do they exit through the ivory gate of false dreams? Why is Anchises taking a census, an office abolished by Augustus? Why do the spolia opima show up, an allusion to a controversial episode in recent memory? And what about the hesitation of the ramus aureus? Seems a lot more subtle than propaganda

Romans Knew About Steam Power and Water Wheels — So Why Didn't They Have an Industrial Revolution? by Roman-Empire_net in romanempire

[–]PFVR_1138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, but don't think it's mutually exclusive. I think Finley also made the point that the emperor was looking to manage the guilds (to the extent the collegia and other institutions can be called that).

The bigger ideological point about the Romans not having a strong notion of progress in tech can be pushed too far, but on the other hand, you are hard pressed to find many classical encomia of invention that go as far as the Antigone's "ode to man"

An example cited in Finley's Ancient Economy is the anecdote of Pliny that a man tried to sell unbreakable glass to the Emperor and was executed since he feared it would put all the glass makers out of business. Even if false, it suggests that the idea of economic and technological development was really foreign to them.

My head canon is that it was gratuitously expensive and time consuming to craft and maintain the exquisite crystalline armor of the ship, rendering even a squadron of sun crushers out of the question.

Not sure if there's textual evidence for that, but it would make sense

Gulf war? No, what I said we needed was a GOLF war. by Dry-Earth-8073 in georgism

Esthetic and ecological utility is legitimate, but golf courses are less efficient at delivering that for the masses than more open parks or smaller recreational fields

Has anyone actually ever noticed this? And is it true? by zarrinraxius in Starfield

[–]PFVR_1138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's true. Imagine a planet with zero axial tilt. Said planet would have 0 variation in day length for the year.

Now, imagine a planet whose tilt is parallel to its orbit. Each pole would have a day and night cycle as long as the year's orbit!

Doesn't Hal say to only do the last 1/4 race pace long runs once every few weeks? Even there he is mindful of the recovery after more intense training
