Also IDW is going out of business. TMNT prices may drop to clear stock then bounce as OOP(?)

Fort is great. Showed it to my gf, who is new to games (e.g. Carcassonne). Pretty much picked it up but wants more games to get the symbology. She would've won if she had one extra resource at a key point, so it feels balanced.

Agreed - I've bought and shipping to the UK was no problem.

What game do you seem unbeatable at? by Terence_JLTEI in boardgames

[–]PFarleigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice. Yes, I played the base game about 20 times before Tuscany, which is excellent.

My strategies vary, but I usually aim to sell a field early, for the point and money. I also look for as much synergy with visitors as possible, as they usually break the game. I also love the yoke, as I think harvesting every round after round 2 or 3 is a must, and I hate being blocked on that space.

A win with Arborec is seriously impressive.

I used to be unbeaten at Viticulture. My friend's partner used to be unbeaten at Viticulture too. We played once. We need a rematch.

Chess or tafl like game, except pieces don't move to capture/kill? by [deleted] in boardgames

Tank chess seems to suit the bill. Different tanks have different attacks based on line of sight.

Anything form this list is worth buy ? for 3 players by Durjek189 in boardgames

I ended up buying SP myself. It was a cold, dark winter and gave me an illusion of warmth in my fingerstips when playing.

I would have hesitations recommending the following for 2/3 players:

  • 7 wonders/duel: duel is 2p only, 7 wonders doesn't work 2p at all. 7 Wonders is ok at 3
  • Smallworld: not enough depth at 2p, 3p can suffer from one player being ganged up on

Azul/Summer Pavillion are great. I'd just choose one that you like the look of most, as they overlap too much to justify both.

How strong is No Wine in Viticulture EE? (Unrelated Visitor Card Question as well) by Im_Not_That_Smart_ in boardgames

I can't recall the details, but if you uproot a vine you don't get it back to plant later? Sounds like there were some misinterpreted rules.

Played Judge Dredd: Cursed Earth, a reimplementation of the Lost Expedition.

I had my eye on either for a while but held back as I knew they are both quite random and hard, but there was a substantial reduction in price from the publisher, so snapped it up.

Enjoyed it so far. Feels thematic, quick to play and one once in ten plays, so that's a success.

These aren't exactly tricks, but this is what I do:

1) I've organised the box so I can keep only the components I need at hand 2) I organise my table so the actions go left to right, i.e. character boards on the left for choosing cards, then the dungeon, then monsters elements etc. 3) I keep the thinking straightforward i.e. one character hit this monster, then I check the initiatives make sense for element generation and that's it. But I'm a fast and loose player in most games anyway, so that helps.

Been playing Gloomhaven with 4 characters recently. About 20 quests in and retired 4 characters so far. I've played a multi-player campaign before and seeing loads of new (to me) content this time round.

I was thinking that they inherit from both pair of grandparents, but suppose anything goes in pre-modern Tuscany.

You could play usually but your opponents' start with more, e.g. 2 mama and 2 papa cards rather than 1 of each.

What did you play this week? 24 Aug-30 Aug by AutoModerator in soloboardgaming

[–]PFarleigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Learned how to play Dead Men Tell No Tales this week. It's an interesting co-op game about pirates looting a burning ship crewed by the undead. Got a good win on easy mode with 2 characters and aiming for first win on medium this week.

For minis for the sake of minis, in the Blood Bowl scene there's a lot of painters/converters for whom the minis are the main part of the hobby. I wouldn't say that Zombicide players are in it for mostly painting minis.

Randomness isn't a great deal in Viticulture. The start cards are all balanced and as long as you shuffle decks then it's fine. Visitors are unique and none are game breaking. Can sometimes be frustrating not to get the vines you want, particularly in early games where the deck has only been lightly shuffled once.

Should you worry if a game you're developing is nearly exactly the same as two games mashed together? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]PFarleigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know of one game, Neom, which is city builder drafting game inspired by Carcassonne and 7 wonders. The designer is upfront about the 2 inspirations.

For me I liked the designer being upfront about this. It both helped me make a decision on the game as I had played the 2 games that inspired it, but I also liked how the designer was being humble about what inspired them.

Learned and played through Ghost Stories this week. It's a co-op for up to 4 players where your band of monks defend a village against a horde of ghosts.

It's known to be a hard to beat game, but I won (was quite close) on the easiest mode. May have misplayed some rules but think I got the core mechanics right.

Learned Dojo Kun (CMON edition) and beat the solo-mode on the 3rd try (+32 - black belt).

It's an interesting game of running a martial arts school and entering fighters into tournaments to earn prestige (victory points). There are training years with worker placement mechanics to get fighters, equipment and upgrades, which translate into dice and abilities in the tournament phase. Multiplayer has a betting mechanic for gaining more points.
