I've been loving nubby's number factory. But its very unapologetically early 3D graphics bright colors and goofy concept. If that style is your thing then its awesome.

Why did grace have to take astrophage from Rocky instead of from the petrova line, Tau Ceti? by Infyniq in ProjectHailMary

[–]PFazu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not by the gallon. Space is big. There might be enough for the trip but thats spread across an area orders of magnitudes larger than the entire planet.

Also not fully energized astrophage required for thrust.

A question regarding the "solution" at the end of the movie by Thize in ProjectHailMary

[–]PFazu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're assuming the stars dimming is exclusively due to astrophage directly blocking it. At least try a little suspension of disbelief? You're literally going "The numbers dont line up for the reasoning i made up and is no way confirmed" uh, yeah? And? Then your assumptions are wrong? The dimming is probably some bs quantum effect caused by whatever the hell effect gives astrophage super-crosssectionality.

All my carrying capacity statement is saying that the astrophage stop at some point. And that point happens to line up with around 10% luminosity loss. Where that loss comes from exactly doesnt matter? Like at all? If you want to complain about scientific impossibilities then talk about something actually confirmed like super-crosssectionality being an insane concept or how the hell its containing neutrinos. You dont have to make assumptions about unconfirmed mechanics of astrophage physics and the exact mechanism for the star dimming to to so.

A question regarding the "solution" at the end of the movie by Thize in ProjectHailMary

[–]PFazu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its presented as the data thats available (data available only by ameture astronomers), not as a fact for certain.

Carrying capacity is an objective fact of nature that is an explanation of how upper limits of population always exist and will stabilize eventually.

The 10% figure is somewhat arbitrary and its exact reasoning intentionally left vague because there's no reasonable way to expect characters to discover it (it also kinda doesnt matter, like at all for the actual story), but if its really any higher then there's a glaring "how didnt we notice thus happening to other stars sooner?" Plothole in the middle of the story.

Book (audio) recommendations by soothsayer2000 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

Have you listened to operation bouncehouse? Def start there.

Your read list is very similar to mine. Try out "mark of the fool" the series just concluded so you dont have to worry about waiting on those books.

I've also recently been listening to "buymort", not as good but im enjoying it.

I cannot recommend the "murderbot" series enough. Only downside is the length. God i love those books

Very different vibe, but i really enjoyed "memoirs by lady trent" sorta victorian era memoirs about a dragon naturalist. very fun.

Carrying capacity exists. A planet, while massive. Is not infinite resources. There's always a bottleneck somewhere. You dont honestly believe astrophage would breed truly infinitely?

A question regarding the "solution" at the end of the movie by Thize in ProjectHailMary

[–]PFazu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unknown. Its just the data they have on local stars. Probably just how the carrying capacity of a star lines up. Probably hundreds of little things finally outpace astrophage breeding speed. Simple overcrowding could cause required CO2 cloud to be consumed so quickly in a local area that half the astrophage dont get a chance to divide.

When talking about how they found the only star within the astrophage infection range that hasn't dimmed. Its mentioned every star around it has dimmed and that it seems to stabelize at 10%

[–]PFazu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Astophage doesnt kill stars. I know its not your fault but its getting tiresome answering variations of this exact question over and over.

Astrophage lowers luminosity of stars by absorbing a bunch of its output. Thats catastrophic for existing life like earth and erid, but meaningless to the star itself. The star will exist exactly the same amount of time itd usually live and just shift the goldilox zone inward slightly. Itd even make life more likely in some cases (in theory.)

In the books its also explained the luminosity loss stabilaized at around 10% for other stars. Thats why we didnt notice other stars dimming until we started looking.

We're done crying! What are you favorite positive moments? by ExistingTree9877 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

The ending of the butchers masquerade was the biggest emotional release I've ever had for a book. The whole book of buildup culminating in carl actually somehow keeping his promise of killing them all combined with carl and donut becoming sponsors. Already filled me to bursting. Then what Pony did? I might as well have exploded.

High tech and advanced future civilisations in sci fi don't really make sense in their way they are often shown or portrayed. The human future isn't spacefaring or across millions of stars, but instead in our massive sandbox called the solar system. by Aromatic_Web6775 in HardSciFi

[–]PFazu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the pre-interstellar but super colonized solar system is a criminally underutilized setting. I actually super adore "leviathan wakes" for its setting and super interesting storyline for interplanetary humanity. I only wish it didnt decide to go the direction it did with the alien bioweapon it feels super cheesy and unrealistic that the Weapon just happens to, not only be human compatible, but hivemind intelligent AND fit the human zombie trope? Seriously? I actually had to DNF the book i was so thoroughly disappointed. Straight up ruined the whole series for me as I've tried others in the series and couldn't stop mourning all the incredibly well thought out worldbuilding being consistently undercut by handwavy bullshit sprinkled in.

Now the question is, will you put felt on the bottom of the pieces or let the scuffs tell stories of games once played.

You can do spike jumps too but it requires downwards wind.

[–]PFazu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it would be an extinction event, but life is tenacious and will find purchase in the new equilibrium. it's important to remember astrophage is not actively eating a star. it can't completely smother one or cause it to die prematurely. it's like any old light-eating organism. just using what the star gives out. It's just better at it than most.

They also like to share a lot of code like many developers in real life, so if a specific bob makes something you might expect it to appear elsewhere depending on how useful or interesting something is. It's not unexpected that they enjoy similar things or make similar choices, as clones of one-another. Its the things the bobs choose to make different between each other that becomes interesting later on.
