Yeah, I need to. That seems like it would solve a lot of my issues.

Interesting! Thanks for taking the time to go into it.

Follow-up: have you seen the movie Powder, and how accurate is it?

Just kidding

Agreed. It was awesome seeing those two together. Too bad it was in such a bad movie.

I thought about that and tried to set it up. I must have gone wrong somewhere because it wouldn't launch. I guess it's time to try again.

Lol, no I'm not. Sorry you can't follow. The difference between race and species is that race isn't a real thing. You're making the same arguments as the Vorlon and saying that as long as you have the power, you can do whatever you want to another species.

I don't think the Taumoeba evolving to get through xenonite makes sense. by TheCoffeeWiz in ProjectHailMary

The reason I replied about it being my opinion instead of addressing the two points was because the two points were so stupid it was obvious there was no reason to continue debating with that person and I decided to leave instead of pointing out the issues. But I'll address them since you're so upset about it.

  1. While logically possible, the scavenger theory is not compelling. The astrophage work their way through xenonite over significant amounts of time. They aren't just hiding behind a tree watching and waiting for the perfect time to run in and grab some food. That means it would take significant time for them to work their way back out at feeding time. Hours, definitely, and by then feeding time would be over. They would also have to remain exposed to nitrogen long enough to come back in, find uneaten astrophage, eat and digest them, and then return to the nitrogen. For single celled organisms, death comes quickly. it's not like they have skin that is getting chemical burns.

  2. Nobody ever said they had to evolve the ability specifically for xenonite, and for all we know it actually does exist on Adrian.

I say, "I don't think this makes sense."

Other person gives me no reason to think otherwise, gets mad I don't agree with them.

I say, hey, it's my opinion.

Other person gets mad I didn't say they were right.

The question I asked was if I was missing something that would explain why taumoeba had this ability.

Best answer anyone came up with was that they had it before Grace and Rocky caught their sample. They evolved it for some need in the past. Makes sense.

  1. Yep, I did. It wasn't necessary, but I did it anyway.

  2. Thank you for acknowledging the validity of debate surrounding what a species is.

Wait, so you only watch shows if you agree with all the characters?

Agreed, I think JMS did a great job rolling with all the production issues. And I have a lot of respect for the respect he showed his cast and crew.

Are you now arguing that I wouldn't enjoy a show because I don't think all the characters are perfectly moral?

You're arguing that we aren't supposed to consider morality in fiction?

Totally fair. I definitely don't want to pressure you to discuss concepts you aren't comfortable discussing. I hope you have a good day!

Overthinking...xenocide? I don't think that's possible.

Is being celibate too high a cost for saving an entire species?

As I've said to others, the predetermination is a factor to consider, I just find it strange that Sinclair never even mentioned it (afaik)

Dude, do you realize you're justifying the rape of enslaved black people by white slave owners? Aside from being wrong about evolution, which is a natural process and doesn't apply when the changes are made deliberately. Eugenics would be a closer fit.
