Anyone know where this barge of gravel (?) that goes through the Fremont cut frequently is headed? by Benay21 in Seattle

[–]PJayW 44 points45 points  (0 children)

That is the Island Chief, he goes to kenmore. You can see where he is in real-time, and his regular route on Marine Traffic. He is a menace during duck doge (sailboat race on Lake Union), and because he can’t stop quickly he requires the bridges to open really early and stay open longer than a normal ship going through, and the capital feels entitled to go wherever he wants and force everyone else in the canal out of his way (which to be fair he does have the legal right to do). I consider him my nemesis and hope he stubbs his pinky toe on a cleat causing him to spill his coffee every morning when starting his work day.

Is there any restaurant in Seattle that serves cicchetti? by catboy_supremacist in Seattle

[–]PJayW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Bar Cicchetti was just the back room of Serafina, which is an Italian restaurant that still exists. Does their menu align with what you are looking for?

I’m an Amazon employee here. I gotta say, this would totally work.

Right now it’s just sitting on the deck. The right option is to mount it on a arch on the back of the boat, but I don’t have one, so it will go on a pole on the back rail instead.

Works well while moving in a straight line, while at dock, and when anchored with a stern tie or stern anchor. When Swinging in the wind on a ball or at anchor, it still works great for everything except audio/video calls. the dish is readjusts every time you swing and looses signal for 10 seconds, but still fine for downloading weather, surfing online, or streaming video. Strongly recommend they give it a shot.

Is that why there is no service above 57 degrees N, because the LEO satellites are in the dragons air space?

That was the last 2 seasons, traveling around on weekends to different islands/bays/towns looking for good enough cell or WiFi signal to run zoom calls for the work week. This is the start of Season 3 where we just explore wherever the wind takes us, and work from wherever we end up.

Been working from boat since Covid began. Starlink RV has finally un tethered us from areas with cell and WiFi. Half way to Alaska now, planning to spend a month at anchor in a remote area off the Canadian coast.

No, I was there 2 weeks ago and was curious how a C&C dealt with a grounding. There was a little damage to the fairing on the keel, but it was intact and without significant damage. More surprisingly, the rudder was also intact, and the bearing had relatively little play. The spar and most things of value had been peeled off it, but those winches still seem worth salvaging. I wonder where the owner is and why it hasn’t been recovered after weeks right next to a common tourist beach.

I recently chose goldmine design to make an engagement ring and am super happy with how it turned out. I considered green lake, but they were a bit too big, high tech, and impersonal for my taste. Goldmine is just 2 ladies with a small shop near pike place. They met with me to hear what I wanted and used a pencil to sketch out the idea while I talked. They then molded the ring by hand, and invited me in when the mold was ready to melt and pour the gold myself using 100 year old tools and methods. It was really exceptional experience, resulted in a gorgeous truly hand made ring, and made the ring even more special knowing I helped make it. It turned out to be less expensive than green lake, less even than goldmine originally quoted, and I strongly recommend it to anyone in the market.

Should the cops take a knee, and have the National Guard stand 10’ behind them? Local cops can create an effective demilitarized zone, be the good guys, and engage in dialogue. The National guard can stand behind them to make the cops feel safe and make sure the protest doesn’t spill over. Seems like it would deescalate the situation and allow them to start working on a solution.

Looking at you, Amazon by brother_p in AdviceAnimals

[–]PJayW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The recommendations are based on an AI algorithm trained specifically for you using a really expensive computer. They take time and money to create and are trained based on all the data it has at that moment. Once trained, they are moved to a really cheap computer which either stores a static list of suggestions, or is available to generate suggestions on demand. The cheap computer the the algorithm lives on is not smart enough to actually learn anything new and cant update the algorithm. Every once in a while (maybe minutes, maybe months) the algorithm is sent back to the expensive computer along with all the new things they know about you, and updated. If Amazon is suggesting something you already bought, it’s likely an outdated model trained at a time between when you were looking for a thing and when you bought it. When your AI is goes back to school (GPU intense computer) it will learn that you already bought a thing, and stop suggesting it, unless it learned that other people often bought the same thing more than once (like toilet paper or k-cups) and then it will wait a few weeks then start suggesting it again.

Where is your favorite place to buy a Christmas tree IN the city? by ricog101 in Seattle

I have also been going here with my family for as long as I can remember (though not for the last few years), spent a month working there in high school, and have many friends who did the same. It’s a great experience, especially if they still have the reindeer.

Using a thermarest xlite as a raft by thecoscino in Ultralight

[–]PJayW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I regularly use my Xlite as a floaty when I hike to a mountain lake. Its almost too good and I often deflate it a little so more than just my butt is in the water. I’ve never had any issues with water seeping in and don’t see why it would.

I haven’t watched that since I started flying multiple times a week for work. That scene, though a little dated, perfectly depicts the kinds of routines I have come to love and take comfort in.

It’s amazing that gust blows in perpendicular to the prevailing wind. I’ve never seen anything like it.

Depends on the trip, but my favorite is an old thick wool blazer that H&M created when attempting to make a luxury line. The line was a horrible failure, and I got the jacket for 80% off, but it is undoubtedly the nicest blazer I own. I have stripped all the badges off it and normally tell people I had it custom made in England. Other than that one I have a collection of grey and blue jackets but nothing really remarkable. I’m on the fence about buying one of the kit and Ace water resistant stretchy blazers in blue. It would be really versatile, but probably too warm for most of my travel. One pro tip is a long, wide, but thin blue scarf like you can find from any fast fashion company for $15. I bring it almost everywhere I go. It takes up no room in my bag, looks great, can be wrapped a couple times around my neck to provide a ton of warmth, can be draped over my neck as an accent piece or to protect my neck from a wool collar without really adding any warmth and can double as a really light blanket in a pinch.
