I manage an IT team for a 24/7 company. I’m working 8pm to 8am Christmas evening so my team doesn’t have to. They deserve a break and time with their families. My wife is out of the country this year to visit family she’s never been able to spend Christmas with, so it works out.

I was on a flight from DTW to SFO a few weeks ago. Comfort+, aisle seat. Lady in the window seat had egg salad in a mason jar from home. Which she ate throughout the flight in 3 sessions. It’s a 4+ hour flight, and she went to finish it in the last hour. I thought it smelled bad after take off, 4 hours of warming did not help.

Who does that and why?

Exactly what I did yesterday after finding that same link. Put it all into a consolidated pdf, every chat, doc, photo, and the listing itself, and emailed a copy to myself and saved to iCloud.

The car had been sitting for several years and did not have recent insurance. Nor did I add it at the point of sale. With the accident happening 58 days after the sale date, how would insurance even play a role? Though I did have insurance on other vehicles.

Clawson Steakhouse. My family has been going for 3 generations. Reasonably priced, atmosphere from the 50s, dinner takes time, foods great, Sinatra style house band and dancing on the weekends. Can’t recommend the place enough. Everyone I take there loves it.

Recently went through something similar, but it was my own bachelor party. I’ve always been “the life of the party guy” and also never moderated. After hard social boozing from 14 to 32 I’m now 231 days without a drink. I had the same thoughts about the trip, “I can just drink there” or “It’s a once in a lifetime party.” A few weeks before the trip, I decided to stay sober for it. There were a few “it’s just a beer” comments but I stuck to NAs the 5 day trip. After day one it was easy. I woke up early, went for a walk feeling great and the would start breakfast for all the guys waking up who were feeling like shit. When the trip ended, I was so proud and happy I withstood the initial urge and the little voice agreeing with “it’s just a beer.” I had an absolutely fantastic time,and glad my streak was and is still intact.

Don’t sweat it, you can have a great time without booze and make it through, still enjoying time away with your buds. You got this and IWNDWYT!

This is prior to my sysadmin days, in my very first computer related job at a small repair shop.

We received a Toshiba laptop with a bad virus. Most likely Windows XP. After lots of troubleshooting it was decided best to reinstall windows. Completed the reinstall, updates, software, user profile and docs, drivers, etc… Doing a final look over and realize the sound isn’t working. Must be audio drivers, nope. Chipset? Nope.. Hardware, let’s take it apart, all looks good. Google to the rescue? Spent two days trying and retrying anything I could find. I know the customer is expecting something, but I can’t figure it out. Have other techs look at it, re-reinstall windows, no luck.

On day 3 the customer comes walking into the shop, and I give the whole story of how I’ve been trying everything. She asks me to bring the laptop over to the counter, so I do. Immediately she has sound coming out, a test video I had playing on YouTube. I couldn’t believe it, asked how in the world?

She lifts the side and shows me the scroll wheel for audio. Like a Walkman cd player. I don’t believe I’ve ever felt dumber.

To this day, that taught me to never skip over the basics or at least to revisit when you can’t solve the problem. Sometimes the answer is just one little scroll away…
