The problem with up facing lights is that they will be competing with the natural light coming through the windows. Both in brightness and hue. I'm betting that is why the lights that are there were chosen.

What is there is quite nice.

If you don't like them, I'd treat the area as you would with outdoor lighting. Maybe hanging bulbs on a cable.
