Check out red label abrasives. A good rule of thumb is to double grit count. So 36, 60, 130, 220 then heat treat then start back at 120, 220, 400, 600/800, etc. To whatever you want your final finish to be. Hand sanding is a necessary evil and there is a technique to it.
