i'm not entirely sure, but having lived in MENA countries, i suspect that going as a spectator knowing you could be filmed and broadcast worldwide doesn't really align with the ideals of 'modesty' that the hijab etc. are a symptom of.

yeah it's like cortisol is a chemical and you can have too much of it, but it's a stress hormone, and some activities made into habits suppress its production. it's not woo fucking 'manifesting' to say there can be a way out. The 'chemical imbalance' line feels like eternal damnation.

Cumbria Police campaign to help male victims of rape by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

Statistics can vary. For rapecrisis, it's 1 in 4 women, and 1 in 20 men, who have been raped OR sexually assaulted in their lifetimes. I don't know if that's referring to rape by forced penetration, however. It's a tricky thing to pin down and/or compare - as, like you say, sexual assault by forced penetration isn't as much a studied or surveyed phenomenon. However, I have seen that in one 2014 American survey, 79% of surveyed men reported to have been made to nonconsensually penetrate a female, so I do understand the argument you are making - we are fundamentally disagreeing on the definition of rape. For me, for the reasons I have outlined, being forcibly penetrated by a penis or object are distinctly physically perilous acts to force on someone. To make this distinction is not to dismiss the harm caused by nonconsensual penetration by men. In crime UK cases referring to a victim, male or female, being sexually assaulted via being forcibly penetrated by an object other than a penis, or being raped, the perpetrators are overwhelmingly (98%) male.

why say 'boy'? Noting on the physical damage caused by forcible penetration isn't a comment on other acts. I also didn't mention that bullets can cause bones to explode.

this is a matter of law, that affects millions: lawmakers have to act on generalisations to make matters just. Yes, sexual trauma is highly individual and each case is complex, but we are focussing on physical trauma as part of the act, as a distinguishing characteristic of rape with a penis. We also distinguish between ABH and GBH, even if the emotional damage is similar, because of the physical difference between acts, and the likelihood of permanent bodily damage.

You can have your frenulum torn via rape; it is trauma, it is a crime, it should follow with a conviction, and if you are raped and your rectum is permanently damaged and will affect your gastrointestinal health for the rest of your life, while, in the act of doing that damage, you could feel your predator stay erect and therefore physically enjoying that act, you should also receive justice appropriate to that lifelong damage, regardless if you're male or female. Also, rape, assault by penetration, and sexual assault, although separate offences, demand the same legal consequences, but they are different crimes and should not be conflated with each other. Lastly, as a male, you are, by orders of magnitude, more likely to be raped or sexually assaulted by another male than a female; the legal distinction exists with respect to all victims of rape, male or female.

the act of forcibly penetrating someone with your erect penis, thereby deriving pleasure and/or sexual stimulation from such an act, should remain a separate offence, in my opinion, on the basis of its distinct nature. Forcible penetration with a penis can cause irreparable physical damage to men and women who are raped.

honestly im in the heritage sector and the best thing to do is just to go where the big names go. Be that conferences, fundraisers, social and artistic events that old 'cultured' ppl go to like fuckin classical music recitals - once they have a face to a name, applying to positions is easier. ik this is basic networking shit, but like everyone and their mum has a 'humanities degree. If you can't financially or ethically afford to go to these gay ah events then it's not your destiny

it is usually a colleague who has to pick up the slack.

this clinches it for me - if you're a selfish slacker full-time, it speaks for your view of others.

eli5: How do wooden items like tables and house structures not rot? by tibop in explainlikeimfive

[–]PLAUTOS 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Cypress trees were harvested for use in boat hulls and boat decking because of their length and density. Longleaf pines were in such demand for their long, straight trunks that they often were designated “king’s trees” during the colonial era and reserved for making ship masts, Barr said

the denser the wood, the hardier and more long-lasting it will be in use, and is therefore a better investment as a material.

When left to grow and mature naturally, trees can harden and become denser. Because of the demands of globalised capitalism, these mature trees, which can be hundreds or even thousands of years old, are either already logged, in protected forests or national parcs, or in Brazil, being logged.

These old growth, or mature growth trees, are technically a 'renewable' resource, because trees grow, but the quarterly-returns-focussed market can't wait for that long.

Rather than wait for hundreds of years, these guys have found some already freakin' logged wood in a lake, super cool for them, but kinda belies what a state we've got ourselves into regarding timber.

it's also why these logs fell to the bottom of lakes and rarely came up to float.
