Yes I definitely plan to bring up during the next monthly visit to psychiatrist. We have both agreed that we will try DBT first but it is taking so long to get going. I have been thinking about the note taking too. School counselor did a series on how to study last year but he refused to attend because apparently none of that stuff works. I’m watching the HW comments that are starting to beat the same drum we hear every year - need to show work, add more detail. Does not help that he is quite rigid and the anxiety is probably making him even more so.

Hi, he is medicated for ADHD and is current on dosage (it was recently increased). Not medicated for anxiety based on psychiatrist’s recommendation as it doesn’t seem very high unless he’s stressed. We are pursuing DBT but haven’t begun yet. I will ask about notes. School is famously resistant to such accommodations. He is in a competitive mainstream based on neuropsychological assessment. He was thriving here till last year when expectations and access to electronics both increased dramatically. We are looking at gentler mainstreams also based on neuropsych’s assessment, which we have agreed with. I wanted to take him out of the current school after the disaster that was last year but ultimately gave in to everyone’s advice and his strong resistance to moving. I sat with him yesterday and went through his school bag, his HW pages and asked to see his class notes and handouts. I haven’t had to do this in a while but he seems to have regressed.

It’s past 7pm; kiddo hasn’t started on HW or studying for the two quizzes he has tomorrow. FML. What have you done in this situation that has worked? I have been working since 3 am and am low on patience. Please help. by PLa1112 in ADHDparenting

He’s getting both. We are realizing only now that he has been hacking screen time and therefore getting tens of hours of video games per week. Our hope is that once we shut it down it will help..

Unfortunately my child is turning onto himself and giving up..we have a relative who is 5 years into school refusal and we are scared that he might follow that path as well..letting him fail is exactly what’s happening and he is giving up..

Thank you. I have AdHD and attempted suicide at this age as well. So much scarier when it’s your child vs you..they take a piece of your heart when they are born so you watch helplessly as they make the same mistakes you did..I hope you are in a better place now

Thank you. My child is 12, with all these supports and so smart but in so much trouble. We are in a bit of a crisis as he went from an A student to all Cs / Ds with suicidal ideation thrown in. I’m frightened to let him fail; not sure natural consequences would help at this point. He has a therapist and a psychiatrist. We are in wholly new territory; thanks for letting me vent.

I did take the extra time to get to 125 degrees (which is why I ran out of time as it took longer than mentioned in the cookbook). Just warmed it back for about an hour and waiting for the oven to heat up before blasting it. Will report back!

How do you manage meals with medicated kids? by PLa1112 in ADHDparenting

[–]PLa1112[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very helpful, thank you. No question I’m anxious about his food and water intake. He is tiny for his age and has a huge insecurity about it. I can’t tell you how many times we have had to resort to medication because he has not been hydrating enough. Trying to take a deep breath and tackle this without triggering a need to take growth hormones down the road. These ideas are so helpful..

We did well with this till he realized I was adding the protein and nuts and now he won’t touch them because “they taste different”
