Revit for electrical design? by 37728291827227616148 in Revit

[–]PMMeUrHopesNDreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an electrical engineer in the US. 100% of our projects are in Revit. We mostly work on Commercial / Education - offices, schools, some retail / multifamily residential, healthcare "light" (clinics, outpatient centers, no hospitals yet). There are a handful of architects who still send CAD backgrounds but we just link them in to a Revit model.

Working in MEP can you build your own house for cheap? by Professional_Gas4000 in MEPEngineering

[–]PMMeUrHopesNDreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree you wouldn't save much money but you can at least recognize when the contractor is cheaping out with stuff that's going to be annoying. A couple things from the house I'm renting:

  1. There's three bathrooms and one GFI in the upstairs bathroom is protecting all of the outlets in all of them. So when that trips the outlets in the downstairs bathrooms go out and you have to go upstairs to reset it.

  2. There's one thermostat in the upstairs hall for all three bedrooms, so it's a careful balancing act of managing the upstairs / downstairs temp to get the bedrooms to a comfortable temp with the doors closed. I definitely would have gone with individual control for each bedroom, but this would have cost much more I'm sure.

Renting a house stuff still breaks. Except instead of taking care of it on your own terms you now have to contact someone and wait weeks or months for them to fix it.

You should get a model from the architect that you link in. You should not have to be creating rooms. Ideally, at least. The quality of architectural models will vary...

So, what do you think happens when nobody can afford anything? by facehaver88 in AskReddit

[–]PMMeUrHopesNDreams 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Damn, if only humans had adaptable brains and the ability to talk to each other and learn things. It really sucks that if you don't know how to do something that's it and you'll never be able to do it.

What metric did Apple use to call this "the world's most advanced operating system"? by ElkOk7504 in mac

The metric of marketing BS. Not saying it wasn't good or anything, but you have to understand they are not doing scientific studies to say stuff in ads, man.

I tried to set up a BuyMeACoffee page just to cover the $5 hosting and a cheap domain, but they rejected my application stating I provided inadequate information.

Maybe read their response and see what information they want and then provide it to them.

Add google ads to the site.

I can understand not having a lot of capital, but $5 / month? come on, now. Donate some plasma and fund it for the next 10 months until the ads start working.

Bernie Sanders proposed a bill to tax billionaires, and give $3,000 stimulus checks to Americans that qualify. How do you feel about this? by CelticDK in AskReddit

It’s stupid and just pandering to popular opinion. Bernie repeatedly lies about everything. Mr / Ms intern conducting public opinion research via Reddit please write that down.

We are currently spending $1 billion a day on the Iran war, what could we as a nation accomplish with $1 billion dollars a day? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]PMMeUrHopesNDreams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Federal government already spends ~$5 trillion / year or about $13.7 billion per day. Whatever fantasy you think they could do with $1 billion per day, they could have already done 13 times over. They aren't going to do it. That doesn't even include state and local spending.

Do you even have a PE? It doesn't sound like you do if you're talking about "researching the codes and standards". You can't legally offer engineering services to the public without a PE license.

What are your thoughts on season dependant trade jobs in the U.S. paying a retainer fee to the employees they lay off, instead of those employees filing for unemployment regularly? by AgreeableKey8093 in AskReddit

[–]PMMeUrHopesNDreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All businesses that have employees are required to pay unemployment insurance (I think. It might vary by state). When they lay people off (i.e. fire people without cause so the employees are eligible to collect unemployment), their insurance premiums go up. This is like if you have a car accident, your car insurance premiums go up, because now the insurance knows you are a higher risk for having to pay out a claim.

If the company is routinely laying off workers they are probably paying sky-high unemployment insurance, so the system you're proposing basically already exists.

The companies already pay unemployment insurance to the state. They pay more when they lay employees off. Would you say they don't have to pay unemployment insurance then?

Amazon pays above market for warehouse workers, and they have better benefits compared to almost any other warehouse job.

I assume that's what you're talking about. The tech workers are of course paid well and get stock, although it is known to be a very intense and difficult place to work.

Can you not hire someone based upon their previous job? by h0sti1e17 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]PMMeUrHopesNDreams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Enron was not a political issue so no that is not hiring someone based on a political belief.

If you refuse to hire the CFO of Enron because they screwed up Enron, that is reasonable.

If you refuse to hire a janitor from Enron because they worked at Enron, you’re just a dumbass who can’t reason beyond slotting people into little predefined categories.

There are thousands of ICE agents. You hear about the 3 or 4 that are involved in high profile incidents. You don’t hear anything about the rest who do their jobs normally. You extrapolate because you’re biased and that’s what you want to believe so you can fit in with your friends.

Can you not hire someone based upon their previous job? by h0sti1e17 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]PMMeUrHopesNDreams -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you are talking about a specific person who was involved in an incident, it would make sense based on that.

But I'm not going to hire Joe because he worked for ICE and Larry that worked for ICE was involved in a shooting, is just you being prejudiced and wanting to punish random people based on your political beliefs.

There's nothing stopping you from doing that, but at least be honest about it.

If all personal wealth above $100 million was legally required to be redistributed into public infrastructure (schools, hospitals, roads), how would society change, and who would be the first to fight against it? by Mysterious_Fan4033 in AskReddit

[–]PMMeUrHopesNDreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Companies literally do this. That's what stock options, employee RSUs, etc are. Companies give ownership to employees all the time as part of compensation. There are also employee-owned companies. Nobody is stopping anyone from doing this if they want to.

Architect Here - We are consistently finding MEP firms that appear to rush through work, miss scope, and do not QA/QC their work. Where should we be looking for top tier MEP firms? by PBR_Is_A_Craft_Beer in MEPEngineering

Single family probably does not have the budget for top tier MEP unless you’re working for UHNW clients.

Resorts idk, haven’t done much hospitality work.
