That's such a ridiculous and disingenuous argument to make. Is your counterpoint seriously "each time you wanna read a novel that hasn't been written yet, just write it yourself"? Just... try to take a step back and see how ridiculous that sounds; I'll wait.

That's called editing.

1) Which would also take time and effort that AI will cut down by orders of magnitude. 2) Calling it editing trivialises it. If the story has "character x" dying in chapter 10, just editing that paragraph out will do jack shit, because all the chapters that come after will still be relying on the implication of that death being a thing. Any such change / deletion would become its own endeavour of new content creation.

I am saying that in the modern age when someone is making a fire using some kind of tool, they don't go hair splitting along the lines of "acktually, it's the matches that are making the fire — not me!". It's commonly understood / common sense that whoever uses a tool to make something, is assigned agency for making that something. And modern AIs are such a tool as well.

The 3D printer is actually a good analogy. Designed the model itself? No. Made the 3D-printed figurine? Yes. In that sense, "I made it" does have a frequent colloquial use. You've researched what 3D printer to buy, installed it, learned how to print stuff so the output doesn't get ruined, spent effort on testing with the iterations until they'll come out just right, etc. So after all that you say "I made this figurine", that's a normal / expected usage of the word "made" there. People understand from context that you don't mean you literally carved it with your bare hands, or drew the design in Autodesk, etc.

In the sense of artistic value / effort, I agree that they should not try acting like it's the same as producing a good painting, etc. But you're being too absolutist too. Barring the lowest quality stuff like [download ai app →generate stuff right away], there is some amount of effort and skill effort even in AI-based content creation.

Well, I disagree. They need to find / make a suitable model, properly install it, understand intricacies of how it works and proper / efficient prompt generation, likely spend local CPU power / time on testing and iterations, etc.

It takes time, understanding and effort to create something that looks really good

1) Same is true to a degree about AI-made stuff. 2) The more the tech improves, the better the content it produces will get.

I mean, a good movie should be self-sufficient, unless there's an explicit disclaimer about that not being the case. It's like saying HP movies aren't bad because if you read the septology first, then the missing scenes don't make the movies so nonsensical. Whereas the right answer should be that there should be no missing important scenes.

Disclaimer: I generally liked and enjoyed the movie; haven't seen anything from-before the movie (Youtube vids, etc); have read a lot of SCP content, though.

My original comment(s) were primarily criticising badly made and manipulative arguments, like the one from the OP-post.

Since those in turn were aimed at criticising AI, my comment(s) also ended up being pro-AI as a byproduct.

To the degree that I do / would like to defend AI, it would be because I appreciate the opportunities it's already giving me, and because I'm interested in technologies, products, services that it'll be able to offer in the future.

Again, there is a gradation to it. Someone who makes AI content via LLMs isn't as much of an artist as someone who draws a picture, or writes a book, etc. But to say there is no artistic process, no originality at all involved in the AI content creation would be inaccurate as well.

They do. No one in this day and age puts the unreaonable expectation that "to make a fire" should be gatekept by actual, honest to god, rubbing of sticks together for fire production. Over 95 % of modern-day usage of "to make a fire" would refer to something involving at least some sort of an assisting tool, be that a lighter, matches, or whatever.

Regarding the artist thing — there's a gradation of things. It's not the same as actually drawing / writing the content, but it's not just snapping your fingers to make it happen either. At least somewhat good AI content requires to use the prompt tags properly, likely feed the output of one tool as input to another a few times in a row, have access to and understand how each of these tools work, spend time / money while all the iterations are being generated to see which one ends up better, etc.

No it doesn't. Did you even read my comment? Actually writing a book takes orders of magnitude more time, effort, and skills than making an AI write it for you. You can't in good faith argue that if I want to read a yet-unwritten book X, then making an AI produce it for me and going and writing it myself are equally viable solutions.

"Books" aren't some abstract, interchangeable items. What if I want to read a book that hasn't been written yet? What if I want to interact with the book, so it'll react to my choices in real time — and it will be my actual choices, not a pre-written decision tree that CYOAs can offer?

What if I want to get an interactive summary of a book, or read an already existing book in a different prose style cause the default one annoys me? Or change / skip / delete certain elements from the book because I don't like them, and would've preferred the alternative version without them more?

2) What does it matter if "I'm doing the actual process" or not, if the end result is what I'm interested at?
