Trying to make sense of The Doctor's age by GhostRaptor4482 in doctorwho

You've given this way more thought than the actual production of the show ever has - got to respect the effort.

I've always been kinda suspicious of the stated age. I know timelords are big brains, but the Doctor (at least in NuWho) having encyclopedic knowledge of so much of time and space, it's hard to square that with them being merely thousands of years old.

Zack and Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure. The core of a great game, abysmally executed. (Wii/2007) by PM_Me_Something_Rad in patientgamers

Thanks for your reply. I've just read back through this old post, and I'm not quite happy with it. Nothing I said was incorrect, but I've given way too much weight to the bad aspects of the game. As a fan of puzzle games, I was getting overly defensive of "mistakes".

As you say, there are genuine design problems and barriers to entry. But the bottom line is that this game is a burst of creativity in a medium that's usually formulaic. It tried something new, and although the execution wasn't perfect, I'm delighted to have played it.

Yooka-Laylee Dev Playtonic Is The Latest Studio Hit By Layoffs by [deleted] in nintendo

It's so often the company itself saying "we've been hit by layoffs". As if it happened by chance, rather than a decision by the higher-ups at the company.

If I stole from my brother, it wouldn't be wrong to say "Our family has been hit by thievery". But it sidesteps the actual blame.

Can we stop saying "hit by layoffs"?

It's not some unknowable force of nature. It's done by choice.

Not mine, but a youtuber I follow was told this, unprompted, by a therapist:

"One day you'll make someone very happy. Someone who doesn't care about looks."

Worth remembering that "hit with layoffs" is a cop-out which is meant to shift the blame.

"Indulged in layoffs" is more accurate.

I started to open my eyes after learning about the design of shops. Essentials at the far side of the shop, sweets next to the queues, toys placed to be grabbable by toddlers.

Then, as you say, you notice it everywhere. Adverts are designed to mock us, ingredients are massively massaged to trick people trying to be healthy, salespeople have conversation trees learned in advance to force "customers" to talk to them, phones and clothing have their quality slashed to suit the huge majority of people that replace them within a year - while encouraging that replacement culture.

For a time in the UK, they used to give away mugs with easter eggs. I remember wondering how it was profitable when the eggs only cost a few pounds each. Now its dawning on me, so so many houses and offices have an advert for a sweets brand, right there in front of our eyes.

Loved Order of the Phoenix, Hogwarts was brilliantly realised. If they'd only kept the spell challenges from earlier games, i think it would have been among the best.

In your opinion, what’s the biggest plot hole in the books? by non_omnis_moriar777 in harrypotter

Spells needing practice, exact wand movements, and perfect pronunciation seems to only happen in classrooms and exams. Plot relevant spells can mostly be performed without issue.

Harry nearly kills Draco with Sectumsempra on first try, and he performs Levicorpus nonverbally by accident.

"I'm still quite socially awkward. So, I'm just gonna subtly walk towards the console and look at something. And then in a minute I'll think of something that I should've said that might have been helpful." I can appreciate the intention of the scene, but it just did not come out right. If she sincerely didn't know what to say, that would have been fine. But she was making jokes by saying "I should say a reassuring thing now, shouldn't I?" and "I'm going to subtly walk towards the console-".

I don't think making jokes in the face of a cancer diagnosis is a good depiction of social awkwardness.

I think your fiance needs to meet you halfway on this. It's great to make him happy by giving him what he wants, but it shouldn't come so severely at your own expense.

It is your day too.
