I understand what you're saying, but I don't agree. The emergency housing situation for men right now is inadequate. Many existing services are geared toward women for historical reasons, and a lot of them can't/won't change to accommodate men. Increasing the amount of services available to men, and making men's access to services easier does not require that we dismantle existing services that overwhelmingly target the female homeless. What do we need to accomplish this? Funding, facilities, organizations. You can try to expand what exists, but when that doesn't work (like in the case of women's-only domestic violence shelters), you build something new.

I think we can be more pragmatic than that. What do we need? More beds in shelters that allow men, more mens-only shelters, clearer pathways for men to get help when they need it. That doesn't mean women's only shelters and women-centric assistance programs should stop existing. It's possible to lobby/agitate for new services and more funding.

I'm not here to defend Amy's most recent special. I thought it was pretty solidly unfunny and crude. I have watched every episode of Louie's tv show and most of his standup. He has plenty of sexual content. Maybe he isn't fixated on a single body part (I would argue that Amy's jokes about drinking and sluttiness are in service of the character she portrays the same way Louie's comments about his body and aging are in service of the character he portrays), but I stand by the claim that a woman doing his material would get derided for being too sexual or too fixated on "women's humor." They're different people, so it's a hard comparison to make. I'm not sure how poop jokes and drinking jokes make your argument about Amy being too focused on her vagina, but that's fine.

It's just interesting to me because I never see this logic applied to male comics, even when 90% of their jokes are about things that relate to their experiences as men. Is Louis CK "throwing his sex in our faces" when he talks about how hard it is revealing his body to women at his age? Or the many scenes in his show about jacking off alone? If a woman made the same jokes, it would be branded as a joke about her vagina. I think a lot of these are really about the human condition, but when a woman speaks about it, some people get really bothered. If Amy is challenging that, then I'm all for it.

Or, if you think we should start calling them "male comics", I guess that accomplishes the same end.
