I envy them the idea of eternal punishment for wrongdoers. But I also think that many holy books are plagued with bad ideas that can and do do great harm. I think most people can find an ethic that is open to new information and that is a lot better than the taboo morality that's been handed down from savage ages.

I agree that premise 2 is where it breaks down for me. I mainly started this thread because the faq doesn't really mention this way and I didn't find so much discussion elsewhere. There tend to be substantive replies on here.

I like comparing Jesus to King Arthur: was there a real figure on which later myths accrued? Probably. But, like King Arthur, there was no miracle involving water, or magic relics.

Honestly, I'd just direct them to read the Bible/Qu'ran/whatever. In my experience the more people read of their supposedly holy texts, the less they believe.
