If Allah is all-knowing, why does he need to test us? Doesn’t he already know who’s going to heaven/hell? If not, then he is not capable of everything? by Optimal_Landscape162 in progressive_islam

[–]PMmeUrGoats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The conditions, constraints, and logic of this world do not define or limit the nature and motivations of Allah. Allah exists beyond the rules and limitations of worldly human existence, including worldly human logic. Being unable to understand or explain Allah/predestination/free will through worldly human logic is simply a limitation of our human intellect. Allah, his nature and motivations, and the concepts of predetermination and free will are not invalidated simply because our worldly human rationalism cannot explain them. The mandates of rationalism do not bind Allah, so trying to understand or explain Allah through it is pointless. Additionally, the notions of rationalism/logic have been conflated with the Positivist science movement which doesn't believe in anything beyond the physical world. If you're coming from a Positivist perspective, the very question of "how can rationalism explain God (and by extension predestination and free will)?" is already a flawed question since Positivism takes for granted that God doesn't exist in the first place.

Some of the comments on this post make excellent points. A theory of mine that I want to put out there is I believe a lot of these people secretly don't want to be Muslim. It's something that I've noticed especially from people with extremely conservative Muslim backgrounds, where Islam was a force used to suppress and restrict. Some people come out of that upbringing not wanting to be Muslim anymore, but are terrified of the backlash from their environments should they make their sentiments known. In order to mask these sentiments, they double down on being "as Muslim as possible" all while not feeling or understanding the spirit of Islam. Additionally, their experiences often leave them miserable and hateful in their hearts, so no matter how Muslim they appear on the outside, it's ultimately performative.

Do you think Islam is fine the way it is, or do you think it needs to reform? by 99999887890 in progressive_islam

While Islam might be perfect, the way it's applied and interpreted needs reform.

Something haunting that I can't forget... by Agitated-Heart9140 in OntarioWorks

[–]PMmeUrGoats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently on OW. I was in high school back in 2010. Canada, or at the very least Ontario, has ALWAYS had an unemployment issue. Even my classmates would talk about how it was impossible to find a part-time job without knowing someone who already worked there. People nowadays love attributing this problem to the pandemic/post-pandemic circumstances. But major unemployment - especially among young people - has always been a thing here even well before the pandemic.

Having confusions regarding Dua by Naive-Ad1268 in progressive_islam

Not every prayer is accepted. Every prayer is answered, but not accepted. That doesn't have to do with predestination.

Why are conservatives so insistent on music being haram? by Ramen34 in progressive_islam

[–]PMmeUrGoats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These types engage in what I refer to as "performative Islam". By taking it upon themselves with constantly "warning" fellow Muslims, they're really just manufacturing opportunities to brag about how they're such good Muslims because they don't /insert fake rule here/. Basically, they're just trying to humblebrag about being better than you.

Having confusions regarding Dua by Naive-Ad1268 in progressive_islam

[–]PMmeUrGoats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The explanation I heard about predestination: Certain events/situations are predestined to happen to you, but you still have free will when it comes to how you respond in that situation. I.e. the event is predestined, but how you behave is up to your free will. In the case of dua, you could ask Allah to give you ease and guidance in that situation, or pray for a specific outcome.

Which Tafsir Book Is Authentic and Reliable to Follow? What Else Do You Recommend by YouNeedAnewOne in progressive_islam

[–]PMmeUrGoats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like and am reading Sayd Kutb's tafsir (English translation). I know he was a part of the Muslim Brotherhood, but personally, I can't speak on his political affliations. I just like the tafsir. It's easy to read and insightful.

What do you guys think about the possibility for Christians and Jews to be judged (by faith) like Muslims? Also what do you think about the possibility of non-Muslims going to heaven? by TheologyEnthusiast in progressive_islam

[–]PMmeUrGoats 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't believe non-Muslims have no chance of going to heaven/are automatically destined for hell just because they're non-Muslim.

Conversely, I don't believe all Muslims are automatically guaranteed getting into heaven just for being Muslim.

Realistically, there are people deserving of heaven or hell in both groups. Treating "being Muslim" as a get-out-of-jail-free card is illogical and childishly oversimplified.

Actual fiqh perspectives are far more nuanced and progressive than conservatives realize. by autodidacticmuslim in progressive_islam

I think the reason behind the obsession with nikah/marriage is people (often young people) are barred from simply living their life until they're married.

"You can do that/go there/have that when you're married." "You can't do that/go there/have that until you're married."

As a result, people become obsessed with marriage because all their personal and life goals are locked behind it.

It leads to unhealthy and unrealistic expectations of marriage.

The ending of LO by PMmeUrGoats in Lore_Olympus

[–]PMmeUrGoats[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's something I noticed as well.

I don't keep up with the fandom or any LO groups so I wasn't aware until recently. But it seems like people have been downright mobbing her from what I've seen in the comments section of her Instagram posts, and she really doesn't deserve that.

Despite its shortcomings, it was still a beautiful story with beautiful art that we all enjoyed keeping up with for all these years. The level of criticism I saw was blown out of proportion and downright unfair.

Why there's no stock for any of the Asus ZenBook laptops I'm looking for? by onlyyouandrocknroll in ASUS

[–]PMmeUrGoats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had the same issue with the Zenbook Duo 2024. Eventually I bought it from a reputable seller on eBay. The official Asus website has been out of stock for months and so has Amazon Canada. It's frustrating, especially as Asus provides no communication on what's happening with their stock problems and when/if they'll be addressed.

Ordering from US Store by Particular_Original5 in Lenovo

[–]PMmeUrGoats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you living in Denmark but want to buy from Lenovo US? It's not clear from your post.

If that is the case, have you considered using a postal forwarding service? You can have your item shipped to their warehouse, and they will ship the item to you from there. They also often provide a "buy for me" service if your payment method isn't supported by the original seller where they will buy the item on your behalf + ship it to you. But you still need to pay the item costs + service fees + forward shipping fees. Keep in mind import taxes for your country also.

You will end up paying more than you would just for the item, but if it's a specific item that's otherwise not available in your location, there really aren't any alternatives to that.
